Towners go third -and Wingate earn a last-kick point!

By Ian Townsend

Enfield Town won our top match last night to close to within a point of the leaders, whilst Kingstonian thought they had three points at Wingate & Finchley but ended up with one. Margate and Bowers also took a point each.

There are only five points between the top eight in the Pitching In Isthmian Premier, and now there is only one point between Enfield Town and top spot after they defeated Billericay Town at the QEII Stadium.

Both sides were in good form prior to last night's meeting. The Towners had only two defeats from their previous ten matches, whilst the Blues put a six match unbeaten run on the line as they arrived at Donkey Lane.

The opening goal arrived seven minutes before the break, and it went to the hosts Joe Payne, who walloped home a beautiful left foot strike. The visitors fought hard to get back into the game, but the points were sealed five minutes from time when Lewis Taaffe found the bottom corner of the visitors net.

It won't be long before the Blues get a chance of revenge- the return is at New Lodge in ten days time. Our image comes from Nicky Hayes, who delivers another set of superb photographs here.

Margate and Bowers & Pitsea were both in desperate need of points. The Blues were seven matches without a win, and had taken three points from the twenty one available, whilst Bowers started the night four points from safety and had lost their previous three matches. The visitors were quickly ahead, Antony Papadopolous with his first goal for the club, but Margate levelled in the thirteenth minute, Phil Roberts scoring his first Blues goal. We may have had two goals in the first thirteen minutes but we had no more in the next seventy seven, and both sides had to be content with a point- a result which leaves Margate sixteenth and Bowers four points from safety in nineteenth.

Wingate & Finchley, three points and one place outside the bottom four at kick off, took on the side one place and one point ahead of them, Kingstonian. It looked as if the K's had taken all three points when Great Evans scored four minutes from time, but sadly for the visiting faithful that turned out not to be the case. The K's had earlier opened the scoring from the spot, Iker Noguera Leon converting on nineteen minutes, only for the Blues to level just after the half hour, Alkeo Bani heading home. Then came that goal from Evans, and it got worse for the Blues, Daniel Emovon seeing red- and yet, with the very last kick of the game, the hosts levelled, Mike Olarewaju forcing the ball home.

Wingate stretch their cushion over the bottom four to four points- whilst the K's are one place and one point better off. That was the third 'draw' between the clubs this season- although the Blues would point out that they actually won one of those on penalties!
