Uxbridge up to third- whilst the Geordies fire blanks

By Ian Townsend

Two of our promotion-chasers had the chance to do themselves a power of good last night- but only one managed it

Hanwell Town and Uxbridge both fell to defeat on Saturday, but the duo knew they could get their Play Off bids back on track if they could pick up three points last night.

Uxbridge, who dropped out of the top five for the first time this season following defeat against Basingstoke Town at the weekend, knew they could overtake their conquerors from Saturday if they could record a victory over lowly Staines Town- and they managed that with room to spare. The Red Army hadn’t had all that much to cheer of late, their side winning only three of their previous ten, but after the hosts battled for a while and kept the deficit to just an Anthony Medny spot kick in the first half, Uxbridge finally hit top gear in the second, adding three more. Juwon Akintunde got two of them, and Alex Witham a very late fourth, sending their side up into third place- albeit twenty one points behind leaders Bracknell Town.

The Swans remain bottom, and have now conceded forty eight goals in their last eleven matches.

Hanwell Town, who were surprisingly defeated by Binfield at the weekend, were at home once more, where they welcomed Thatcham Town. The Kingfishers fired six goals past Staines Town at the weekend, but they couldn’t add to that last night- however neither could the Geordies, and the match ended goalless. That’s only one win from six for Hanwell, who are one of three sides on fifty four points.
