Loan defender Oliver Downs swaps Whitehawk for Burgess Hill Town

Burgess Hill Town last night announced the loan signing of AFC Wimbledon defender Oliver Downs.

Ollie was on loan with the Hawks last month, and made a debut in Velocity Cup defeat against Haringey Borough. That turned out to be his only appearance, and he now moves up the A23, hoping for his chance as Hill travel to Chichester City on Saturday.

Ollie is a second year Scholar at the Dons, and this- so far as we can see- is his third loan spell, after he spent time with Fleet Town last season. He is normally a left back, and has played for the Dons Under 18 side.

Witham deliver a walloping

Witham hit five on the road as Enfield lose five in a row

Witham Town moved in to the Pitching In Isthmian North top ten last night, travelling to take on Enfield and giving the E’s a darn good thrashing.

Enfield had only one win from their previous ten matches, whilst Witham had taken seven points from their previous three, so we knew which team was in form- but the manner of the victory was still rather impressive.

On eight minutes a free kick was headed down to Khris Oti, who was making his first Town start, and their new number nine made no mistake. That was the end of the scoring in the first half, and indeed it took until seven minutes into the second period for a second goal to arrive, but arrive it did, Shakeel Morris capitalising on some poor defending and firing across the keeper and into the net.

On sixty nine minutes Oti was back on the scoresheet. More dreadful defensive work saw Witham win back the ball, and a cross to the back post found Oti with so much space that he probably had time to read the programme and still find the net. Seven minutes later it was four, a fine finish from Josh Osude after another defensive calamity, but the E’s finally got onto the scoresheet two minutes later, a corner, a goalmouth scramble, and Ronnie Bates poking the ball home through a crowd of bodies from six yards.

It was no more than a consolation. Only four more minutes had passed before Osude got his ninth goal in ten games, another fine finish, and finally- mercifully- that was that. Enfield one, Witham Town five, the visitors into the top ten, the hosts losing five in a row.

Witham’s run in includes Bury Town, Bowers & Pitsea, Walthamstow, Brentwood Town, Lowestoft Town, Felixstowe and Maldon, so whilst they are unlikely to make the top five themselves they could have a big influence on who does- and on that form none of the promotion chasers will be delighted to take them on.
