Woods cross the water- whilst Uxbridge take on another giant

By Ian Townsend

Whilst leaders Northwood are in Guernsey, we have three points between second and seventh- and Uxbridge welcome Dover Athletic in the Trophy. Here’s our preview.

After taking only one point from their previous two matches, leaders Northwood bounced back in style to defeat Leatherhead last weekend and will look to increase their six point lead by prolonging Guernsey’s home misery. The Green Lions are without a home win this season- and indeed have only one point- but they did take four points from six against the Woods last season. This campaigns Woods, however, look rather a tougher prospect.

Second place Chertsey Town are on the road to Chipstead, the Chips three unbeaten and having put four past Ashford Town last time out. What the Chips can do, however, the Curfews did better- their recent encounter with Ashford seeing them score six! That was their first three points of a five match unbeaten run which has included five victories.

We’ve fourth v third as Walton and Hersham welcome Westfield. The Swans have hit an inconsistent patch, losing three and winning two of their last five, but they’ve followed the previous two defeats with a victory so will hope that pattern continues. The visitors have gone nine league matches unbeaten, and will hope to become only the second club this season to take points at the Sports Hub.

Marlow, in fifth, travel to take on Leatherhead at Fetcham Grove. After three impressive consecutive wins Marlow have taken their foot off the gas a little, with only one point from their last two matches, whilst you never know which Leatherhead will turn up, winning a losing by turn. If their pattern continues, Marlow will take this one!

Basingstoke Town had a fantastic second half at Merstham last Saturday, rattling home four goals- and it could have been more. They welcome Tooting & Mitcham United, the Terrors third from bottom and with only one win in seven- but they did look like taking a point at Walton last time out, until an injury time winner decided otherwise.

South Park could jump back into the top five, but they’ll have to win at Bedfont Sports to have a chance of doing so. The Sparks have been extinguished of late, losing their last three in League and Velocity Cup, whilst Sports have never really got going this season, and have taken two points from their last twenty one.

One point separates eighth place Southall and ninth place Binfield- although the Moles have three games in hand over tomorrow’s opponents. The hosts have lost only one of their last ten, whilst the Moles got back to winning ways against Bedfont Sports last weekend. Despite a tricky run of late, Binfield are still only four points off the top five with two or even three games in hand over most of the sides above them.

Hanworth Villa and Sutton Common Rovers meet in a mid-table battle- albeit with the Villains four points better off. The hosts are on a five match unbeaten run with three wins, two draws, and two goals scored in four of them; whilst Rovers have won four of their last five in League and Velocity Cup, and defeated promotion chasing Walton & Hersham last weekend.

Seventeenth welcomes twentieth as Thatcham Town play host to Merstham. The Kingfishers have won only twice this season, but the Moatsiders would love to have two wins, as they are still searching for their first one.

In the FA Trophy, Uxbridge, who defeated Pitching In Isthmian Premier Wingate and Finchley in the last round, go a step higher this time around as National League South Dover Athletic travel to Honeycroft. The hosts seemed to be already focused on this match when they lost to Leatherhead in midweek, whilst Athletic were along the A40 in Oxford, losing three-one to Oxford City. It’s less than a year since Uxbridge were knocking Chippenham Town out of this competition- let’s see if lightning can strike once more!
