Can the Robins and the Darts maintain their momentum?
After three matches, only Carshalton Athletic and Dartford hold perfect records. Will that continue for another weekend? It’s our Pitching In Isthmian Premier preview
Leaders Carshalton Athletic have had a fine start to their campaign, with wins over Whyteleafe Wingate and (Cray) Wanderers, and the Robins will hope to maintain their advantage at the top as they travel to take on top flight new boys Stanway Rovers. The hosts are still looking for a first win at Step Three, and have conceded seven goals in their last two matches, so will be determined to stamp out any defensive errors and make their mark.
Dartford, second only on goal difference, welcome Welling United in a Kentish derby. Wins over Three Bridges, Brentwood and Maldon have left the Darts in a strong position, whilst their visitors have also had a strong start to the season, winning two of their first three, and start the weekend in seventh spot. Dartford did the double over Wings last season.
Third place Leatherhead have been impressive thus far, victories over Ramsgate and Welling followed by a draw with Burgess Hill Town. The next side to threaten their unbeaten record will be Maldon and Tiptree, who have picked up three points from their first three matches as they travel to Fetcham Grove.
Eastbourne Borough take their unbeaten record on the road to Flamingo Park, where they take on draw specialists Cray Wanderers. Wands were kept out of the Play Off spot last season by their habit of picking up one point where three were required (sixteen draws from forty two matches), and have already drawn two of their first three this season, so will be rather keen to put that right in front of their own fans. We’re don’t believe the sides have ever met before, so this may well be a first.
Dulwich Hamlet, in fifth, travel to Wingate and Finchley, their hosts still looking for a first win after drawing two of their three matches so far. The two meetings between the sides last season both ended in away wins, and we’re sure Hamlet would like that to continue for one more match.
Enfield Town have had a comfortable start after their return to us, with two wins from their first three- and the match they lost, against St Albans City, they played in the main with nine men, so they’ll be confident of maintaining their momentum as they travel to Brentwood Town. Their hosts have lost their last two, both of them against expected promotion rivals, but have a one hundred percent record on their own patch. This will be the first meeting between the sides in more than a decade, so the fact that the Towners have been victorious the last three times they’ve met looks a rather spurious statistic (and we’re sorry for mentioning it!).
Chatham Town will be looking for a third win in a row as they head to Whitehawk, whilst the Hawks have picked up only one point so far- and haven’t defeated these opponents in seven attempts. Meanwhile St Albans City hit the road to the seaside to take on Ramsgate, the Saints looking to bounce back from defeat against Lewes, the Rams hoping to recover from a loss against Enfield Town.
Burgess Hill Town seem to be finding their feet, and our tenth place side hit the road to Cheshunt, their hosts without a win yet but with only one defeat from their opening three matches. Cheshunt took four points from their meetings last season.
Aveley have had a slow start to their campaign, winning only one of their three opening matches, and head to Sussex to take on a Three Bridges side who have started with three defeats- albeit each of them by a narrow margin and each of them against a promotion contender. Bridges will be cursing the fixture computer- but keen to finally turn a battling performance into points.
Lewes picked up a well-deserved three points in St Albans last time out, and will be rather keen to record three more as they welcome newly-promoted AFC Whyteleafe to the Dripping Pan. Leafe have only one point so far, but will have been encouraged by their draw with Wingate and Finchley last time out.
