Pitching In Isthmian Supporters Predictions: Winchester City

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-22 will be worked into a final table which you will see shortly. 

Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?

I would say the Falmouth away game, where we came back from 4-1 down to win 6-5; unfortunately I couldn't go! There was also the 4-0 win at home to Portishead which saw Callum Buckley score an outrageous volley and a 1-1 draw at Frome which saw 16-year-old Lewis Brown make his debut and play like he'd been at the club for years, the dominant pre-Christmas home win against Shaftesbury, Olly Balmer's goal from the halfway line at Willand Rovers, and the win at Exmouth with ten men that secured a playoff spot.

And what was the worst moment?

Probably the two draws against relegated Brixham. There was also the home defeat against Frome - no shame in losing to the eventual champions but it was absolutely freezing and I spent all game wishing I'd stuck a fiver on Macclesfield to beat Crystal Palace. Losing the play-off semi final at home to Shaftesbury wasn't fun either. 

Which member of your squad was your Player of the Season - and why?

Lewis Brown. Was thrown in at the deep end away to Frome, nearly scored six minutes later, and comfortably held the left back position. Jointly won fans' player of the Year with the retiring Danny King.

Moving on to your current squad - which players do you think will make a big impact during the 26/27 campaign?

Lewis Brown, obviously, but we've retained several key players who can make a difference; Brad Waters, Dan Bradshaw, Jez Bedford, Olly Balmer and Lewis Ross.

Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

Realistically? Well, a playoff spot will be a good start - we finished top six in our last five seasons at Step 4 (we were fourth at both terminations in 2020) and made the playoffs last season, but the mood around the squad is that we're capable of challenging for the title. That would be a fantastic season!

If you could choose a song for your side to run our to, what would it be- and why?

We currently run out to Right Here, Right Now by Fatboy Slim, but the Chelsea fan in me has to go for the Liquidator.

From all the opposition players you watched last season, which one would you love to see in your side- and why?

There are two options: one being Frome Town's Archie Ferris, who scored a hat-trick against us for Frome, but Toby Holmes' 32 goals are the reason why Shaftesbury reached the play-off final. 

What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?

This is a difficult question as we've always been a Southern League side! Having said that there are a few teams we played before; Hendon is always a nice place. Plenty of new grounds to look forward to, especially Jersey! Although for those coming to the Charters Community Stadium, there are several pubs between the station and the stadium.

If you travelled away, which ground served the best food?

If we're staying in the Isthmian League, I'd say Hartley Wintney. Last time I went there with Winchester, all the food was locally sourced.
