Wings boss Maxwell signs a two year deal

Ryan Maxwell rewarded for Welling's climb out of the bottom four

Welling United have announced that manager Ryan Maxwell has signed a new two year contract.

Wings aren't yet safe from relegation, but Maxwell has certainly had a galvanising impact on their fortunes since joining the club in November. His new deal comes with his side sat outside the bottom four on goal difference- a point clear of third bottom Cray Valley PM with a game in hand. That game is due to be played on Tuesday 14th April, Potters Bar Town the visitors.

Maxwell joined Welling from Pitching In South East promotion-chasers Sittingbourne.

He took over  at Sittingbourne in January 2023, with the Brickies in dire straits at the bottom end of Pitching In Isthmian South East, and steered them on a remarkable run to safety. They eventually ended the campaign in eleventh place- thirteen points clear of the bottom four- and at one point delivered a twelve match unbeaten run. They suffered only three defeats under his leadership during that particular season- against Play Off qualifiers Beckenham Town and Hythe Town, and on the final day of the campaign against Lancing.

The 23-24 campaign saw him take his side to third place, losing in the Play Off Semi-Final against Three Bridges, and 24-25 saw the Brickies finish second, amass more than one hundred points, and reach the Play off Final- as well as defeating giant after giant to reach the Quarter Finals of the FA Trophy, the best Trophy run in their history.

Prior to joining the Brickies, Ryan steered Braintree Town to National League South safety for two successive seasons. He was previously in charge at Walthamstow.

He turned out for a number of clubs during his playing career, including Grays Athletic, Margate, Bishop's Stortford, Tonbridge Angels, Billericay Town, Whyteleafe, Heybridge Swifts and Witham Town. He also played in Scotland for Hamilton Academicals and Raith Rovers, and this side of the border for Braintree, Welling United, Dagenham and Redbridge, Gravesend and Northfleet and more. He played youth football much higher up the pyramid, for the likes of Chelsea and Crystal Palace.
