Ashford United is a club defined by its resilience. While the modern iteration of the "Nuts and Bolts" dates back to 2011, the roots of senior football in this corner of Kent stretch deep into the 19th century.

From the Ashes: The Early Years

The original Ashford United was formed in 1891, though the town's footballing identity truly crystallized in 1930 with the formation of Ashford Town FC. For decades, the club was a pillar of the Southern League, becoming a powerhouse in Kent football and moving into the iconic Homelands Stadium in 1989.

The "Nuts and Bolts" nickname pays homage to the town’s long-standing connection to the railway industry—specifically the massive locomotive works that once dominated the local economy.

Crisis and Rebirth

Football is rarely a straight line. Following financial difficulties that saw the original club wound up in 2010, the local community refused to let the sport die. In 2011, Ashford United was officially reformed.

The club hit the ground running in the Kent Invicta League, securing promotion almost immediately. The early 2010s were marked by a steady climb back up the non-league pyramid, fueled by a loyal fanbase and a determination to return to the Southern and Isthmian levels.

The Modern Era at Homelands

The last decade has seen Ashford United establish itself as a perennial contender in the Isthmian League South East Division. Highlights of the modern era include:

2016-17 Season: A historic campaign where the club won the Southern Counties East League Premier Division, scoring over 100 goals.

The Play-off Charges: The club has consistently knocked on the door of the Isthmian Premier, reaching multiple play-off finals and semi-finals, cementing Homelands as one of the toughest away days in the circuit.

Technological Growth: The installation of the state-of-the-art 3G pitch at Homelands transformed the club into a true community hub, allowing for year-round football and a flourishing youth academy.

Mark "Stanno" Stanton: A fan favorite who made over 300 appearances, Stanton is remembered for his incredible pace and for scoring two goals at Craven Cottage in the famous FA Cup replay against Fulham in 1994.

Peter McRobert: The ultimate one-club man, holding the appearance record for Ashford Town with 765 games—a feat of longevity unlikely to ever be repeated.

Roy Hodgson: Before he was a Premier League and England manager, the legendary Roy Hodgson plied his trade at Ashford Town in the late 1960s and early 70s, even serving as a player-coach.

2024–25 Season Recap: A Year of Silverware

The 2024–25 season was a landmark campaign for Ashford United, specifically for its achievements on the national stage.

League Performance: The club maintained its status in the Isthmian League South East Division, finishing comfortably in 11th place. While the play-offs remained just out of reach, the squad showed flashes of brilliance against the league's top sides.

The FA Cup Trailblazer: The standout story of the season was captain Gary Lockyer. In a historic feat for a non-league player, Lockyer won the Emirates FA Cup Golden Ball, finishing as the top scorer in the entire competition with 10 goals. He was honored at Wembley Stadium during the FA Cup Final, a proud moment for every Ashford fan.

Top Marksmen: While Lockyer grabbed the national headlines, Louis Collins was equally vital, finishing as a leading scorer alongside the captain to provide one of the most feared strike partnerships in the division.

The season had already thrown everything at us, but your unwavering support from the terraces continues to be our driving force.

A New Chapter on the Pitch

The headline of the season undoubtedly was the change in the dugout. Following the departure of Lloyd Hume in December, we were delighted to welcome Craig Stone as our permanent first-team manager. Craig brings a wealth of experience, tactical intelligence, and a clear vision for the brand of football we wanted to play at this club. The squad adapted quickly to his methods. We saw fantastic application from the lads, bridging the gap between our experienced heads and some exciting new faces. The new additions helped inject real quality and energy into the side, while club legend Barry Fuller continued to impact the future in his vital role as Head of Football Development.

Looking Ahead: 2026–27

As we turn the page to the 2026–27 season, there is a renewed sense of belief echoing around The Green Box Stadium. The groundwork laid by Craig Stone over the winter months has paid dividends, evidenced by the incredible loyalty of our squad, with all most every single player opting to pull on the shirt again this season.

Squad Continuity: In a massive statement of intent, Craig Stone secured commitments from every single member of the squad that finished the 25–26 season to stay at the club.

Summer Signings: The squad has been selectively strengthened with the additions of goalkeeper Jordan Gillmore, left-back Archie Johnson, and the lightning-quick winger Michael Ademiluyi.
