Stratford Town FC — Club History

Origins (1940s)
The club was founded in 1943 by Paul Bartlett as Stratford Rangers, created to give local servicemen home on leave during the Second World War the chance to play organised football. Early "friendly" matches were played at the Recreation Ground and a field off the Birmingham Road before the club moved into competitive football after the war, quickly establishing itself as a strong junior side — winning 24 of 35 games in 1945/46. After finishing runners-up in the Stratford-upon-Avon & District League and winning the Alcester Nursing Home Cup in 1946/47, the club left local football altogether for 1947/48, joining the Birmingham Alliance. Their first away game produced a 19–0 record victory over Terrys Athletic. In 1948/49, under trainer Harry Shaw, the team reached the semi-final of the Birmingham Junior Cup and drew over 1,000 supporters to Villa Park for the Aston Villa Cup final. At the end of that season, with council approval, the club renamed itself Stratford Town, adopting the town's crest and colours.

Early success in the Alliance (1949–1954)
As Stratford Town, the club won the inaugural RAFA Cup (1949/50) and reached several cup finals through the early 1950s, including winning the League (Alliance Senior) Cup jointly in 1951 and outright in 1952 against Hall Green Amateurs. Under player-manager Len Livingstone, the club won the Aston Villa Cup and Presidents Cup in 1952/53, scoring 164 goals across all competitions. In 1953/54, prolific striker Gordon Hillman netted 50 goals as Stratford won the league title, beating Dudley Town Reserves 6-2 in front of a record crowd. Around this time the ground was relocated slightly north and enclosed with changing rooms and a stand — the site that would remain largely unchanged until the eventual move to Knights Lane decades later.

Midland Combination and league-hopping (1954–1994)
Improved facilities saw the club accepted into the Worcestershire Combination (later Midland Combination) for 1954/55, replacing Kingswinford & Wallheath FC, under new manager Allan Sands. Stratford won the title in 1957 and reached a Challenge Cup final. From 1957 the club spent time in the Birmingham & District League, winning the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1963. The following decades saw multiple moves between the Midland Combination and the Hellenic League, with fluctuating fortunes — including a bottom-place finish and a relegation — before the club won the league in 1987. A new clubhouse, changing rooms, and floodlights followed in 1990.

Midland Football Alliance era (1994–2013)
Stratford were founder members of the Midland Football Alliance in 1994, finishing 3rd in their debut season with Andy Smith named MFA Player of the Season. Severe financial difficulties in 1997/98 led to a takeover by local businessmen to save the club. Manager Lennie Derby steadied the ship, with the club finishing runners-up in 1999/2000 and challenging near the top for several seasons after. The club won its first League Cup in 2003 (beating Causeway United) and retained it the following year with a win over Rushall Olympic, becoming the first team to do so. Derby resigned in January 2005 after six years in charge, replaced by assistant Ian Britton. Striker Craig Pountney won the MFA Golden Boot twice in this period. Management changed hands several times over the following years — through Dennis Mulholland, Micky Moore, Rod Brown, and Morton Titterton — with the club regularly finishing in the top half but narrowly missing promotion. Carl Adams took sole charge in 2012/13 and led the club to the MFA title (at one stage 19 points clear) with four games to spare, securing promotion to the Southern League Division 1 South & West and ending a 19-season stay in the MFA.

Rise through the Southern League (2013–present)
The 2014/15 season saw Town reach the promotion play-offs, beating Taunton Town in the semi-final and Lakhall Athletic in the final in front of a record home crowd of 1,054, earning promotion to the Evostik Southern League Premier Division — the highest level in the club's history. Consolidation followed, with a best-ever league finish of 14th in 2016/17. The 2018/19 season, under new manager Thomas Baillie (succeeding a brief spell under Darren Byfield following Carl Adams's 300-match reign), proved the club's most successful yet: winning the Southern League Cup, reaching the first round of the FA Trophy, and finishing 5th before losing in the play-off semi-final to King's Lynn. Baillie left for Tamworth in 2019/20 and was succeeded by Tommy Wright, then Paul Davis, with that season curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2020/21 season was likewise ended early and all results expunged, with the club sitting 3rd after just eight games.

The 2021/22 season delivered a landmark FA Cup run: on the competition's 150th anniversary, Stratford reached the first round proper for the first time in their history, beating National League side Boston United 3-2 after a replay. They were drawn at home to Shrewsbury Town in a game televised on ITV4, losing 5-1 in front of a sell-out crowd of 2,800 at the Arden Garages Stadium. League form dipped afterwards, finishing 13th, with Paul Davis replaced by Tim Flowers and then Ian King. Dean Holdsworth and Gavin Hurren took over as a management pairing in 2022/23; Hurren assumed sole charge from 2023 and narrowly missed the play-offs on goal difference that season. In 2024/25, the club again challenged for the play-offs for much of the campaign before falling short; Hurren departed in October, with Paul Davis returning to take immediate charge.
