The club was founded in 1891 and is known as The Ploughmen. It represents one of Buckinghamshire's longest-established football institutions, combining more than a century of heritage with a modern vision for sporting growth.

The club has entered a new era of transformation, built upon its historic foundations while embracing a clear ambition to progress through the English football pyramid. Following years of sustained development on and off the pitch, Winslow United achieved the defining milestone of its modern history during the 2025–26 season, securing promotion to the Southern League Division One Central for the first time.

The promotion was achieved after defeating Cockfosters 2–0 in the Southern League Division One Central play-off final on 4 May 2026. Goals from Charlie Attwell and Aaron King secured a historic victory in front of a record-breaking crowd of 1,008 supporters at Elmfields Gate.

Winslow United play their home matches at Elmfields Gate, known locally as "The Gate", which has a capacity of around 2,000, including 100 seats. The club is recognised for its strong community identity, extensive youth development pathway, and commitment to representing the town of Winslow on and off the pitch.

Winslow United was established in 1891, initially as Winslow Town F.C., closely linked to the town's Reading Room, which promoted recreational sport during the Victorian period. The founding meeting was held at the Parish Rooms, Market Square, on 13 October 1891, chaired by Mr Herbert Bullock.

The club's first recorded match took place on 31 October 1891, when Winslow defeated Granborough 3–1 on the Flower Show Field, lent by local landowner T. P. Willis. The original team colours were dark blue and white.

The current name, Winslow United F.C., was adopted at the start of the 1895–96 season following the merger of Winslow Town and the junior club Winslow Rovers.

The club quickly became an important part of local life, using football as a means of bringing the community together. Matches regularly supported local causes, including charitable fundraising events during the club's early years.

Winslow became a founding member of the Buckingham & District League and later competed in regional competitions including the Aylesbury & District League and the North Bucks & District League before joining the South Midlands League in 1968.

The 1970s represented one of the most successful periods in Winslow United's early history.

Under manager John Webster, Winslow United won the South Midlands League Division One title in 1974–75, establishing themselves among the leading clubs in the region. The following season, the club achieved a second-place finish in the South Midlands League Premier Division, marking a sustained period of success.

During this era, Winslow developed a reputation for competitive football and regularly challenged near the top of the league.

In the 1983–84 season, Winslow reached the Second Round Proper of the FA Vase, defeating Ware and Royston Town before eventually losing to Tiptree United. This achievement remained one of the club's greatest national cup performances for more than four decades.

Challenges and rebuilding

By the early 1990s, Winslow experienced a difficult period. In the 1991–92 season, the club was relegated from the South Midlands League Premier Division after a challenging campaign.

Following restructuring within non-league football, Winslow competed in the Spartan South Midlands Football League system, experiencing periods of rebuilding while maintaining its commitment to community football.

In 2009–10, senior football was temporarily withdrawn as the club focused on strengthening its youth structure through Winslow United Juniors F.C., ensuring the long-term sustainability of the club.

Return to senior football and community growth

Senior football returned in the 2010–11 season, beginning a new chapter in Winslow United's history.

The club rebuilt steadily, with strong links between the senior side and the youth pathway. The development of teams from under-7s through to under-18s created a clear route for local players to progress into senior football.

This community-focused approach became central to Winslow United's identity, combining competitive ambition with a commitment to developing football opportunities for people across the town and surrounding area.

Modern rise and historic promotion

The modern era has been defined by consistent improvement, sporting ambition, and a renewed connection between the club and its supporters.

Winslow achieved three consecutive top-three finishes in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One between 2017–18, 2018–19, and 2021–22, demonstrating the club's growing competitiveness.

In 2023–24, Winslow United finished third in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One and won the promotion play-off final against Northampton Sileby Rangers, earning promotion to Step 5 of the English football pyramid and returning to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division for the first time in 32 years.

The club continued to progress during the 2024–25 season, finishing tenth in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and matching a historic FA Vase achievement by reaching the Second Round Proper for the first time since 1983–84.

The 2025–26 season became the defining moment of Winslow United's modern history.

The campaign represented the culmination of years of progression, following the club's return to Step 5 football and continued investment in its playing structure, coaching environment and community foundations.

Under the leadership of Manager Alex Woodfine, assisted by Rory Williams, Winslow United produced a remarkable campaign built on attacking football, consistency, and a strong team identity.
