Horsham triumph in our Community Shield

Horsham hammer Billericay- but Prostate Cancer UK are the biggest winners
Horsham, about to start their National League South season, welcomed Billericay Town in our Charity Shield yesterday, both sides hoping to pick up their first silverware of the season and raise lots of cash for our charity partners, Prostate Cancer UK. Nearly six hundred people turned up to watch.
The two sides, of course, fought for our Pitching In Isthmian Premier title a few months ago, and ended up separated by the slimmest of margins. On that basis, we expected a tight, tense battle- but what we got was one way traffic, as the Hornets delivered a hammering.
The Hornets were four-nil up within seventeen minutes, five-nil up by half time, and added a sixth in added time. Remarkably, that means that their last four matches have each ended with a trophy- as well as our title they have won the Sussex Senior Cup, the Sussex Community Shield and now our Charity Shield. We wish them luck at Step Two next season.
Every October since 2018, Prostate United has invited football club staff and fans to run, walk or cycle every day during the month and has raised an incredible £1 million for Prostate Cancer UK. It’s been supported by clubs from the Premier League down to grassroots level, and returns for an eighth year this October.
Our Managers will be able to sport the charity’s ‘Man of Men’ pin badges on the sidelines with fans also able to check their risk of getting the disease via the charity’s 30-second online risk checker – prostatecanceruk.org/isthmian-risk. Prostate cancer often doesn’t cause symptoms in its earlier stages when it’s easier to treat, so knowing your risk could be life-saving.
One in eight men will get prostate cancer. The earlier it’s found, the easier it is to treat – but there’s currently no screening programme. Men are at higher risk if they are over 50, Black or have a father or brother who has had prostate cancer. Anyone with concerns should visit the charity’s online risk checker.
