McCann out, Scopes in at the Blues

Gary McCann departs Billericay Town, and former Aveley boss Danny Scopes takes over

Yesterday Billericay Town announced the surprise departure of manager Gary McCann- and today they have announced his replacement, former Aveley boss Danny Scopes.

Gary took over at New Lodge at the end of the 22-23 campaign, and of course steered his side to within a goal of taking the Pitching In Isthmian Premier crown at the end of last season, Horsham instead triumphing by the very narrowest of margins. Gary previously spent thirteen years at Hendon, both as a player and a manager, and was also in charge at National League South side Hampton and Richmond Borough for two seasons in between the Greens and the Blues.

A club statement explained:

'Following discussions between the Board and Manager Gary McCann, it has been mutually agreed that Gary will step down as Men’s First Team Manager with immediate effect.

Gary joined the club in April 2023 and quickly set about rebuilding both the squad and the spirit around the club.

In his first summer he reshaped the playing group and coaching team, and his respectful approach and open communication helped strengthen the bond between the team, supporters and the wider club.

Under his leadership, we came within a single goal of winning the league title last season, a clear sign of the progress made.'

Today came the announcement that Danny Scopes was stepping in as McCann's replacement.

Danny took over at Aveley in November 2021, and guided the Millers to two promotions and a League Cup win, before taking them to their highest ever league position, a National League South Play Off place in 23-24. He left Parkside at the end of last season.

Prior to his time at Aveley he became a legend at Concord Rangers, guiding the Beachboys to the FA Trophy final in May 2021. He also assisted the Cowley Brothers in Rangers' rise from the Essex Senior League to National South before coming first team manager in 2019.

The Blues statement explained:

‘Billericay Town Football Club is pleased to confirm the appointment of Danny Scopes as our new First Team Manager Danny brings considerable non-league experience, including guiding Aveley FC from the Isthmian North Division to the National League South via two promotions, and securing their highest-ever league finish in Step 2 of the National League South Joining Danny as part of the management team will be Adam Drew, who has recently departed his role as Head of Recruitment at Chelmsford City.’
