Pitching In Isthmian Supporters Predictions 26-27: AFC Whyteleafe
Dan Hawksworth celebrates a campaign where green was most certainly the colour
We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-22 will be worked into a final table which you will see just before the big kick off.
Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?
For sheer adrenaline and raw emotion it has to be winning the Isthmian SE playoff final on penalties at Croydon Athletic. A few of us did live radio commentary of that match and whenever I listen back to the recordings it still gives me goosebumps. I also heard Stormzy was in attendance and some of our Committee managed to get a photo with him.
And what was the worst moment?
Unfortunately there were a number of incidents of racism and other unsavoury behaviour from opposition fans (some examples of which were captured on our live radio coverage). It was incredibly upsetting to see the impact on some of our Black players. Shocking to see that this is still an issue in 2026.
Which member of your squad was your Player of the Season - and why?
During the normal league season there were a few deserving candidates but it's got to be Big Slav (Huk) for his penalty save heroics in the playoff semi vs. Jersey and final vs. Croydon Athletic.
Moving on to your current squad - which players do you think will make a big impact during the 26/27 campaign?
Early days but a few players have really impressed during pre-season. I think that Matty Warren will be integral to a successful season, plus great to see Dami Olorunnisomo back in Leafe colours charging down the right wing.
Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?
I think we might squeak a playoff finish (helped by the expansion of playoffs down to 7th).
If you could choose a song for your side to run our to, what would it be- and why?
It's got to be our classic "Leafe Will Tear You Apart (Again)" by Joy Division. It can be risky to start singing that until we are 3-0 up though!
From all the opposition players you watched last season, which one would you love to see in your side- and why?
Slightly left-field call given they finished bottom of the league but Ethan Covus really impressed a number of Leafe fans at East Grinstead. He came on as a sub when EG were already 5-0 down but the spirit and positivity (and pace!) that he showed was a demonstration of a really strong individual character in the face of adversity. Hopefully he has a bright future ahead of him.
What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?
We all had a really great time at Ashford United's Green Box. Really warm welcome (on a cold misty afternoon), and the bar / private box setup they had was top drawer.
If you travelled away, which ground served the best food?
This one is a bit of a cheat but our recent pre-season friendly at Punjab United. As a vegetarian I am used to being let down by non-league food options but their "Samosas & Chickpea Curry" tray was absolutely banging!
Please predict your top five:
1. Eastbourne Borough
2. Burgess Hill
3. Aveley
4. Enfield Town
5. AFC Whyteleafe
Now, over to the rest of you! If you are reading this and you’d like to represent your club, please email Ian on [email protected] and he will get back to you as quickly as possible.
By the way, if you’ve sent through your responses from a Step Four club and haven’t seen them yet, never fear! We’re going to focus mainly on our top flight this week and hold some of the North/South Central/South East responses over until next week, as most of our sides at that level don’t start their League programme for another week.
