Foundation and Rapid Rise

Founded in 2009 following the demise of Berkhamsted Town, Berkhamsted FC have become one of Hertfordshire’s notable non-league success stories. The club’s early years under Micky Vipond laid strong foundations, with back-to-back Spartan South Midlands League titles in 2009/10 (Step 7) and 2010/11 (Step 6).

The second of those title-winning seasons was especially impressive, producing 107 points, the highest total achieved by any non-league club in England that season, and earning the club the Hertfordshire FA’s Sir Stanley Rous Memorial Trophy. After consolidating in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division (Step 5), Berkhamsted earned promotion to the Southern League in 2018 (Step 4) under Steve Bateman & Lee Bircham.

Those early achievements gave the club credibility, momentum, and a platform. The period that truly shaped Berkhamsted FC’s modern identity, however, has come under Chris Devane who took over in June 2020.

The Devane Era

The arrival of Devane marked the start of the most successful period in Berkhamsted FC’s history. Under his leadership, the club has grown from being a strong Step 4 club to a side capable of winning titles, lifting county silverware and, in 2025/26 knocking on the door of promotion to Step 2.

In his two spells at the club, spanning more than 250 games, Devane has built a team with quality, resilience, and a clear winning mentality. Players such as Ryan Kinnane, ex-pro Adam Watkins, and the talismanic JJ Lacey have been central figures in the transformation, providing consistency, leadership, and the standards around which the side was built, Lacey's 121 goals and 103 assists in 220 appearances setting the bar. Their contributions have helped define an era in which Berkhamsted has become a serious force in Hertfordshire football and beyond.

The first achievement of the era was the double in 2022/23 with the Comrades winning the Southern League Division One Central championship by 19 points and beating Hitchin from the level above in the Herts Senior Cup final. That first promotion to Step 3 represented a major milestone in the club’s short history and placed Berkhamsted among the strongest clubs in the region.

Growing Support and Big Occasions

The club’s rise has also been reflected in growing support at the Glencar Community Stadium. Promotion-winning seasons, cup finals, and major fixtures have brought bigger crowds and a stronger sense of momentum around the club with a record crowd of over 2,000 for the play-off final win against Flackwell Heath in 2024/25.

The Devane era has given Berkhamsted supporters many of the club’s defining modern memories: title-winning football, county cup triumphs, record attendances, and a team built around players who became strongly associated with the club’s recent success. The likes of Luke Andrews, Jack Tompkins and JJ Lacey are loyal to Devane and have all left but then returned to the club to play for him.

A Modern Success Story

In little more than fifteen years, Berkhamsted FC has risen from a newly formed club playing at Step 7 to a side which finished fifth, its highest position ever, in its most recent Step 3 season. League titles, promotions, county cups, and a growing supporter base with each season generating record season ticket sales are all part of the Berko story.
