First team berth sparked move

Lowestoft Town have revealed that defender Blake Saker returned to Ryman League rivals Leiston because they couldn't guarantee him first-team football when the new season kicks off.

The Premier Division's Trawlerboys have had a relatively quiet summer in the transfer market so far with only Will Viner joining from Thurrock FC.

Director of Football Craig Fleming explained Saker's exit after their pre-season win over First Division North AFC Sudbury.

He said: "He’s just a lad that’s desperate to play and we can’t promise him that. We’ve got Dan Gleeson and Curtley Williams that can both play at right back and Leiston came in for him. Everyone at the club wishes him the best of luck for the future."

Gleeson’s contract has been extended for another season and Fleming says the former Luton Town defender is likely to take on some coaching responsibility.

He added: "Dan is a very good player and he’s a really good lad, and a good influence to have around the place. I’m also going to speak to him about taking on a bit of the coaching.

"He has played at a very decent level and it shows in how he goes about his business. On and off the pitch he is someone that the other lads look up to and it’s very good news for us that he’s committed to our cause."
