Jammers stick it to Sudbury, Urchins ease relegation fears, and Robins keep winning

By Ian Townsend

We had a number of important games on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Here's a round up of the action.

The race for promotion- and the fight against relegation- is heating up across our leagues, and we've had a number of crucial matches over the last couple of nights. Here's a look at what happened.

In the Premier Division, Carshalton Athletic played their traditional Monday night match at Colston Avenue, entertaining relegation-threatened Harlow Town. The Robins downed the Hawks with a goal in each half, Danny Dudley in the first and Jacob Mendy midway through the second, earning them their fifth victory from nine unbeaten matches and seeing them climb to within three points of a playoff place.

Harlow remain second bottom, four points from safety, and saw two of their relegation rivals fight it out last night, as AFC Hornchurch entertained Wingate and Finchley. The Urchins had improved dramatically of late, with three wins from their last five, and they made it four wins from six with a comprehensive three-nil victory. Charlie Stimson got the opening goal just after the half hour, and although the Urchins then had to hold on to that slender lead until five minutes from time, late goals from Joe Christou and Ronnie Winn saw them comfortably over the line.

Hornchurch have now built an eight point cushion between themselves and danger, whilst their opponents are three points behind fourth bottom Whitehawk, now having played the same number of matches with a vastly inferior goal difference. Harlow are a point further back.

At King George's Field Lewes, previously without a win in seven matches, thrust themselves comprehensively back into the playoff picture with three points at Corinthian-Casuals. Both goals came in the second half, Kieron Pamment with the first twenty four minutes from time, and Luke Blewden with the second right at the end. The Rooks are eighth, ahead of Carshalton on goal difference, whilst Casuals are six points clear of the drop zone.

Into the North Division, last night saw Maldon & Tiptree move into second place with a comprehensive thrashing of a very young AFC Sudbury. Two goals from Jerome Slew gave them a two goal advantage before Tom Maycock got one back, but any hopes of a comeback by the home side were dampened by an own goal four minutes from half time which sent the Jammers into the break with a 3-1 advantage. Oluwatobi Coker and Eddie-Louis Dsane made absolutely certain of three points with further goals after the break.

The Jammers move nine points behind leaders Bowers and Pitsea, but perhaps more crucially eighteen points clear of sixth place Bury Town.

Barking had some wonderful news this week, with a thirty year lease on Mayesbrook Park awarded and plans to lay a new 3G surface during the summer, and last night they moved up to thirteenth place with a two-nil victory over Great Wakering Rovers. Both goals came after the break, and both came from Nana Boakye-Yiadom.

In the South Central Division, Bracknell Town strengthened their grip on second place with a four-nil thrashing of Uxbridge. Liam Ferdinand got them underway from the spot in the 18th minute, and then after the break Adam Cornell, James McClurg and Joseph Grant put the outcome beyond doubt. That's twenty six points- and no defeats- from the last thirty for the Robins who haven't lost since December 15th.

Finally we head South East, where sadly the match between Whitstable Town and VCD Athletic was abandoned early on due to an injury to a visiting player. We hope he is soon on the road to recovery.

We have one match tonight, as FC Romania entertain Chalfont St Peter- and don't forget that we have a Friday fixture too, as Aveley entertain Witham Town in the North Division.
