Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

Ryman League Premier Division

Maidstone United were finally able to celebrate winning the Ryman League's Premier Division and promotion to Conference South after a 3-2 win over East Thurrock United at the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Another terrific crowd of 2,226 saw the Stones get the result they needed, courtesy of goals from Jay May after 22 minutes and then Billy Bricknell in the 38th and 83rd minutes, with the Rocks replying through Mitch Gilbey on 75 minutes and then Max Cornhill six minutes from time.

Hendon finished runners-up and did all they could by beating Leiston 2-1 at Earlsmead, ending the regular season on a tremendous run of twenty-three games unbeaten. And if they can maintain that form they could pose a massive threat in the play-offs.

However, they had to come back from being an early second minute Tom Winters goal down before securing victory through Kezie Ibe after 57 minutes and Leon Smith 14 minutes from time.

Margate finished third and in contrast to Hendon, ended a run of six games without a win by beating Bognor Regis Town 1-0 at Nyewood Lane, courtesy of a 39th minute Kane Willis effort.

The two remaining top five places went to Dulwich Hamlet and Enfield Town, who face an anxious wait to see if they can take their place in the play-offs after being charges by the FA for fielding an ineligible player.

Hamlet got the point they required from a 2-2 draw at Longmead against Tonbridge Angels in front of a crowd of 758.

Marvin Williams put Angels in front after 18 minutes, only for Harry Ottaway to level four minutes later. Xavier Vidal then gave Hamlet the lead for the first time on 72 minutes, only for Mitch Pinnock to equalise five minutes from time.

Enfield held on with ten-men for almost an hour against already-relegated Witham Town after Joe Ellul was sent-off for retaliation in the 33rd minute – just two minutes after Tyler Campbell had given the hosts the lead in front of another good crowd of 763 at the QEII Stadium.

Campbell`s second just shy of the hour-mark sealed it for Town and those results meant that Metropolitan Police missed out by a point despite beating relegated AFC Hornchurch 2-1 at Imber Court.

The Met trailed to a 51st minute Jay Mat effort until the final eight minutes when first Joe Turner and then Rob Bartley turned the game in the Met`s favour.

Grays Athletic still had an outside chance of making the top five if results went their way.

However, despite Mark Bentley`s side doing their bit by beating Kingstonian 2-0 at Kingsmeadow, victories for the Met and Enfield kept them out of it.

Sean Cronin after 47 minutes and Joao Carlos 10 minutes later were the Grays` marksmen.

Peacehaven & Telscombe's rollercoaster season came to an end with relegation after just one season in the Premier Division.

Despite racing into a two-goal lead through a Kieran Murphy own goal and Wilfred Grimaud effort, they were eventually swept aside by a Hampton & Richmond Borouh side who showed the kind of ruthlessness that Peacehaven have so often lacked.

Charlie Moone after 48 minutes and Jack Rose eight minutes later pulled the Beavers back on level terms and then Ryan Newman on 62 minutes and Duncan Culley six minutes from time sealed the points and Haven`s fate.

Elsewhere, bottom-markers Bury Town failed to bow out with a win, losing 2-0 at Ram Meadow against Lewes, for whom Elliott Romain after 23 miknutes and Henry Muggeridge nine minutes into the second half sealed victory.

VCD Athletic`s excellent end-of-season run continued with a sixth successive win, this time 2-0 at home against Billericay Town, courtesy of goals in the final two minutes from James Duckworth and Lanre Azzez.

Marc Charles-Smith scored the only goal after 27 minutes to earn Harrow Borough a final day win at Leatherhead while Canvey Island finished on a high.

They edged out Wingate & Finchley by the odd goal in five at the Prospects Stadium thanks to Steve Smith after 35 minutes, Jack Simmons on 54 and Harrison Chatting on 62 minutes – and all after the visitors led 2-0 with goals from Karl Oliyide after 11 minutes and Rob Laney on 33 minutes.
