Saturday's Ryman South action review

Ryman League South Division

Sussex sides Crawley Down Gatwick and Hastings United are the only two teams in Ryman South with 100 per cent records from their opening three games, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Crawley Down won the derby at Three Bridges, thanks to a last-gasp Ashley Elson effort after Marcus Elliott had cancelled out Gary Holloway's 19th minute opener for the visitors in the 64th minute.

Hastings, who were relegated at the end of last season and then left managerless on the eve of the new campaign, won 2-1 at the Pilot Field against newly-promoted Redhill with goals from Jamie Crone after nine minutes and a Sam Adams free-kick just before the break. Niall Egan did pull one back for the visitors just past the hour-mark, but United held on.

At the other end of the table, Sittingbourne are the only side yet to claim a point after they were beaten 2-0 at Merstham, whose Aaron Rhule bagged a brace in the 37th and 83rd minutes.

Guernsey AFC are not finding things all that easy in their new surroundings and suffered a first half horror show at Footes Lane against Ramsgate, turning round 4-0 down.

In front of a crowd of 1,017, goals from Ollie Schulz after 11 minutes, James Everitt eight minutes later, Ian Pulman on 42 and Everitt again three minutes later gave the Rams their amazing interval advantage that the Channel Islanders were unable to reduce.

Two other Sussex sides, Worthing and Eastbourne Town, gained their first points of the new season. Eastbourne were held to a goalless draw by Corinthian-Casuals at The Saffrons.

Worthing found themselves a 33rd minute Sam Hasler goal down to Herne Bay at Woodside Road. However, a Jack Delo own goal on 64 minutes and then Luke Gedling 11 minutes from time looked like turning the game in the Rebels' favour. But Jamie Turner popped up with a last-gasp Bay equaliser to deny them.

There were no goals either at Fetcham Grove between fancied Leatherhead, who had won their first two games, and promoted Peacehaven & Telscombe, while a goal from Martin Dynan 12 minutes from time earned Walton Casuals a 1-0 win at Folkestone Invicta.

Goals from Sam Fisk after 26 minutes and then Max Miller in time added on at the end saw Burgess Hill Town to a 2-0 success at Tooting & Mitcham United.

Whitstable Town edged out Chipstead by the odd goal in five at the Belmont Ground, courtesy of a late Jack Wells header. Earlier a Mo Takaloo penalty had given the Oystermen a fifth minute lead that Dan Moody levelled, also from twelve yards, seven minutes after half-time.

Sean Rivers then gave Chips the lead six minutes later, only for James Morrish to restore parity just past the hour-mark. A draw looked the likeliest outcome until Wells popped up with his 89th minute winner.

Not too far away, Faversham Town completed a 2-1 win over Horsham, taking a 12th minute lead through Rhys Lawson before Billy Dunn gave the Hornets parity in the 40th minute. Dave Botterill scored what turned out to be the winner for the Kent hosts right on half-time.

Hythe Town had one of the most comprehensive wins of the day – beating ten-man Walton & Hersham hosts 4-0. The Swans were reduced to ten-men after only six minutes when Mark McLeod was dismissed for a poor tackle on Ronnie Dolan. Dave Cook with two – the first from the spot on 34 minutes and a second on 78 minutes – plus Shaun Welford and Michael Yianni on 42 and 54 minutes, completed the victory.
