Will the Blues retain their trophy? Or will the Boys in Blue triumph?

It's our Velocity Trophy Final Preview

On Wednesday night at 7.30 PM the Final of the Velocity Trophy will kick off at Parkside, home of Aveley FC. Competing for the prize will be holders Billericay Town and Jim Cooper's Metropolitan Police side. Let's take a look at how they reached the final.

Billericay Town

Last season's final is perhaps better remembered for a video of Glenn Tamplin's squad singing 'The World's Greatest' than it is for the football on show- but the football was quite special, as Billericay ran out 8-3 winners over Tonbridge Angels in a match played at Carshalton. The Blues had a fairly routine passage to that match, including a 7-0 win over Worthing and a 3-0 win over Heybridge Swifts, but they've had to work much harder this time around.

The First Round, back in September, saw a 5-1 victory over Barking at the AGP Arena, whilst Rounds Two and Three both came in November, and featured both teams from Maldon. First came the Jammers of Maldon & Tiptree, who were swept aside 3-0, before a match against Jody Brown's Heybridge Swifts which ended 1-1, Billericay eventually triumphing 5-3 on penalties.

A 1-0 win at Wingate & Finchley followed in the Quarter Finals, before a close fought semi-final against Corinthian-Casuals ended in a 3-1 victory for the Blues.

Metropolitan Police

Last season Met's run in the competition went only as far as the Second Round, ending in defeat to Corinthian-Casuals. This season, however, has been an entirely different story- and given they have had to defeat four of their Premier Division rivals- including second and third place Folkestone Invicta and Dulwich Hamlet- on the way to the Final, they certainly shouldn't be underestimated.

Their competition began on 22nd August with a 3-1 win at Harrow Borough, and that was followed by a trip to the Kent coast where Invicta were despatched 2-1. North Division relegation fighters Romford provided a rather easier test in December's Round Three, and a 4-2 victory was the outcome, before the Quarter Final saw Enfield Town defeated 2-1. Last month the Boys in Blue travelled to Tooting & Mitcham to take on Dulwich Hamlet, and after a hard fought 0-0 draw took the tie decisively on penalties, 4-1.

Current form:

Billericay have won three and drawn three of their last six league matches, whilst Met have won one, drawn two and lost three over the same period. But, of course, this is a one-off, a Cup Final, so anything can happen!

General Information:

First time visitors to Parkside will find a large car park, ample covered standing and seating space and a fabulous bar- although of course it has become a second home to Billericay lately so their fans probably already know that!
