A crucial night for the play off chasers- and the relegation strugglers

By Ian Townsend

We’ve four matches in the Pitching In Isthmian Premier tonight, with possible impacts at both ends of the table. Here’s our preview.

Fourth place Enfield Town are now fourteen points behind leaders Worthing, and with seven matches left that ship has almost sailed, but they can increase the gap between themselves and sixth place Lewes to ten points if they can defeat relegation-threatened Leatherhead at the QEII Stadium tonight. The Towners have won their last three matches and seem to be over their mini-slump, whilst the Tanners are in their best form of the season, having won their last two. If this match is important to the Towners, it is critical for Leatherhead, who are eight points from safety.

The last time the two met, on October 9th, goals from Mo Faal, Percy Kiangebeni and Adam Cunnington gave the Towners a three-nil win.

Hornchurch, who start the night in fifth, could climb as high as third if they can defeat Corinthian-Casuals at Bridge Avenue. The Urchins have been in fine form, with only one defeat in their last ten; whilst Casuals have hit a rut, with only five points from their last thirty and no wins in the league since January 15th. They are eight points above the bottom three, but would very much like to start picking up points so that they don’t get dragged into a scrap at the wrong end of the table.

Cheshunt are nine points behind the Urchins in the chase for that last Play Off place, but are in fine form and haven’t given up the chase yet- particularly as they have two or even three games in hand over the sides above them, courtesy of that fabulous FA Trophy run. The Ambers are on the road to a side who need the points for entirely different reasons, East Thurrock United having hit rock bottom after defeat to Leatherhead at the weekend. This is the Rocks game in hand over two of the three sides directly above them, and they really need to collect three points if they are to have any chance of a great escape.

Another relegation-threatened side, Merstham, are on the road to Bognor Regis Town. The Moatsiders are only a point above the bottom three, and with seven defeats from their last eight matches need to arrest a rather alarming slide, whilst their mid table hosts haven’t managed to find any consistency all season but are twelve points and seven places better off. This is their first meeting of the season.
