A North Trophy Saturday

By Ian Townsend

We have four all-North clashes, and a number of other exciting FA Trophy ties in prospect on Saturday. Here's our preview.

Biggleswade are the hosts for Stowmarket Town, and the two had markedly contrasting fortunes in the Cup last weekend, the hosts hitting eight without reply against Maldon & Tiptree whilst Stow were being hit for seven at Billericay. Town have only one win so far this season, that coming against Potton United in an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie three weeks ago.

Not too far away Biggleswade Town welcome Bury Town. The two Biggleswade sides are currently separated not only by a short distance but by only goals scored in the Pitching In Southern Division One Central table, and Town were also hammering a North Division side, New Salamis, on Saturday- that one ending five-one. Bury have gone three matches without a win, and will hope to quickly regain their form.

Felixstowe & Walton United welcome fellow Pitching In Isthmian North side Brentwood Town. The Seasiders have had an unbeaten start to their season in all competitions, whilst the visiting Blues haven’t really got going yet, their only win coming against Kings Langley in the FA Cup. United are seven matches unbeaten against the Blues.

Hertford Town are the next obstacle in the way of Grays Athletic’s hunt for a first win of the season. Town are currently seventh in Pitching In Southern Division One Central, and were on a good run before Ware defeated them in a Bank Holiday Monday derby.

Heybridge Swifts, top of Pitching In Isthmian North, will hope to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat- their first of the season- to Gorleston in the cup. Swifts welcome Barton Rovers of Pitching In Southern Division One Central, Rovers having lost only once in all competitions so far this season. They have already faced North Division opposition, knocking East Thurrock United out of the FA Cup.

Lowestoft Town face New Salamis at the seaside. The Trawler Boys were undefeated prior to losing at Canvey Island in the Cup last weekend, whilst the visitors have lost their last two matches but spent last season proving that they were difficult to defeat. Their two Pitching In Isthmian North meetings last season saw one win each.

Redbridge have had an up and down start to their Pitching In Isthmian North campaign, and play for the first time since Bank Holiday Monday as Stotfold come to call. The visitors, from Pitching In Southern Division One Central, have also had a similar gap without a match, and also hope to bounce back from a defeat on Bank Holiday Monday.

Our old friends Waltham Abbey play host to Ipswich Wanderers. The Abbots, these days in Pitching In Southern Division One Central, find themselves in fourth place and with wins in their last two matches, whilst Wanderers ended a winless run stretching back over five matches to defeat Witham Town in the Velocity Cup in midweek, and will be hoping that was the catalyst for a successful campaign.

Welwyn Garden City have had a mixed start to their Pitching In Southern Division One Central campaign, and welcome our North Division Bees, Basildon United, on the back of two defeats in league and cup. United haven’t played since Bank Holiday Monday but have delivered some impressive moments this season, and will hope to deliver another.

Witham Town and Maldon and Tiptree meet in an all-North clash. Town departed the Velocity Cup in midweek but prior to that had lost only once this season, and have already won three cup ties. The Jammers were hit for eight in the cup last weekend and don’t yet have a league win. Rather surprisingly, the last five meetings between the sides have ended in away wins. The Jammers will hope that continues.

Wroxham and Brightlingsea Regent are thrown together in another all-North Division clash. Both sides will be full of confidence. The Yachtsmen are five unbeaten, have lost only once all season, and demolished Premier Division side Concord Rangers in a midweek cup replay. Regent have a one hundred percent record- and not just in the league, they’ve won each of their cup ties, too.
