A South East Saturday

By Ian Townsend

We've another big day in Pitching In Isthmian South East. Here's our preview.

Beckenham Town welcome Three Bridges, the hosts looking for their first points of the campaign, the visitors aware that three points will send them to the top of the table. Bridges have taken four points from matches against Horndean and Phoenix Sports, whilst Becks may have defeated current leaders Ashford United in the Cup last weekend but lost their opening league match. Town won both matches between the sides last season.

Burgess Hill Town see Erith & Belvedere head to Mid Sussex, the second Erith to arrive in two Saturdays and Hill’s third match against an Erith in a row, after they finally disposed of Erith Town in a cup replay midweek. The Deres narrowly lost their opening league match but have since won two cup ties and will be in a positive frame of mind. This one could be a cracker.

Chichester City welcome Lancing in an A27 derby, the Lancers prepared for a long queue at Arundel- although this one is being played at Bognor Regis Town due to ongoing ground works in the Cathedral city! Lancing have had a fine start to the season, three matches and three wins, and showed their mettle to win after going two down at Badshot Lea last weekend; whilst City started their campaign with a draw against Phoenix Sports. Last season saw both sides pick up a win each against each other, both by the only goal of the game.

Cray Valley PM have had a positive start to life under Steve McKimm, triumphing in both league and Cup. The Millers welcome newcomers Broadbridge Heath to the Artic Stadium, Heath having made a steady if not exciting start to the campaign, drawing against Sheppey United before losing a penalty shootout in the Velocity Cup last weekend.

East Grinstead Town have hit a Hythe shaped roadblock over the last couple of weeks, losing to the Cannons in League and Cup, but will hope to get back to winning ways when Herne Bay arrive in Sussex. Bay, who looked in decent form when winning a cup replay against Bedfont Sports in midweek, drew their opening game. The last time the two sides met in Sussex the match ended goalless, although Bay won the return four-nil on the way to 21-22 promotion.

Horndean play host to Sittingbourne, the Brickies looking for a first point, the hosts looking to add to the point they picked up on opening day. Sittingbourne will hope that their penalty shootout win over Sevenoaks Town last time out will give them confidence, whilst Horndean have had a confident start to the season, two three-nil cup wins sandwiching a two-two draw at Three Bridges.

Merstham will hope to pick up a first league point- or points- of the season as Hythe Town come to call. The visiting Cannons have so far only played East Grinstead- twice- winning both times, but whilst the two sides haven’t met in the league for almost a decade the Moatsiders did knock their visitors out of the FA Trophy last season. The last two Saturdays have seen Merstham lose narrowly in League and Cup.

Ramsgate followed a surprise opening day defeat with four goals in the cup last weekend, but will want to get some points on the board as they host Littlehampton Town. The Golds bounced back after a cup hammering to defeat Beckenham Town last time out. Last season both matches between the sides ended in a two-nil home win.

Finally, Sheppey United welcome Phoenix Sports. The Ites drew their opening league match at Broadbridge Heath but followed that with a three-nil cup win last weekend; whilst Sports had a goalless start to the campaign against Chichester City but have followed that with heavy League and Velocity Cup defeats.
