Ambers to name new boss within hours

Cheshunt

Cheshunt are expected to appoint a new manager within hours after parting company with Omer Riza on Monday night just four weeks into the new Ryman League campaign.

The Ryman North club announced on Tuesday that the former Arsenal striker, pictured, had left the Theobalds Lane following a poor start to the season that has seen the Ambers collect just five points from six outings and exit the FA Cup at the first hurdle after their 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Thurrock on Saturday in the Preliminary Round.

Ironically, whoever succeeds Riza will face Thurrock in their first game in charge on Saturday when the Ambers host their FA Cup conquerors in Ryman North action.

Riza, 34, took the helm as player-manager last October after a short spell as caretaker manager following the departure of Tony Faulkner in August. He made 150 appearances as a professional in England, scoring around 70 goals, and also had a three-season spell in Turkey with Trabzonspor.

Cheshunt chairman Dean Williamson said: "Our start to the season has not been what either myself or Omer expected. Like me, I know Omer is deeply disappointed with our results and I felt it best for both of us to move on.

"On behalf of the club I would like to state our thanks to Omer for his efforts during his year with us. I have a lot of respect for Omer and I wish him every success in his managerial career. An announcement on a new appointment will be made later today."
