Ansell, pictured, stood down at Burroughs Park on Thursday night with his side fourth from bottom and heading to high flying AFC Hornchurch on Saturday. First team coaches Rob Polkinghorn and Steve King have agreed to take temporary control of first team affairs.
The 37-year-old former Rovers player and assistant-manager stepped up to take the helm last season as the successor to former boss Dan Trenkel with the Essex club fighting for survival.
Rovers announced Ansell's decision to resign in a statement on their website paying a warm tribute to their outgoing manager.
Great Wakering Rovers
The club said: "It's is with great regret that Great Wakering Rovers FC have to announce that first team manager Gary Ansell has resigned his position with club. Gary has made the decision following a string of results which now see Rovers one place outside the relegation zone.
"Gary has been associated with Rovers for many years as both player, assistant manager, and last year becoming first team manager following the departure of Dan Trenkel. Gary did a great job in steering Rovers to Ryman League safety and the club will be forever grateful to him in what he achieved after taking over in such difficult circumstances.
"We would like to place on record our thanks and best wishes to Gary on his future endeavours and we're in no doubt he will be back in the hot-seat at another club soon. Thank you Gary from all at Rovers."
