Are the Jammers home and dry? Or can one of the chasing pack still make a fight of the title?

By Ian Townsend

Yes, dry might not be the right word to use at the moment- but here’s a hopeful preview of Saturday’s North Division fixtures. If you’ve any influence with the weather gods, please get them to make it stop!

In recent weeks Maldon and Tiptree haven’t looked like the all-conquering heroes they were earlier in the season, but- defeat against Romford apart- they’ve still been grinding out victories, their last four by the same score, two-one. The Jammers won’t mind that too much, as they are still a colossal eleven points clear at the top of the table, with four games in hand over their two closest challengers- and a fourteen point advantage over Aveley, the only side to play the same number of matches.

Our leaders are on the road this weekend as they travel to Histon, who have only one win from their last ten.

Second place Heybridge Swifts are at home, as they welcome Histon’s current tenants, Cambridge City. The visitors delivered a five-nil thrashing of Hullbridge Sports in midweek and are in their best form of the campaign, with four consecutive victories- whilst Swifts have taken only two points from the last nine on offer and will want to get back to winning ways as soon as possible.

Bury Town are in third, a point behind Heybridge. They are back at Ram Meadow as they host Sports, for whom that thrashing against Cambridge was their fourth defeat in a row, a period when they have conceded sixteen goals. Town got back to winning ways last time out, defeating Grays Athletic after two consecutive defeats in previous fixtures.

Aveley are back in league action after the end of their glorious FA Trophy run at Notts County last weekend. The Millers have drawn their last four matches, but if they get back to winning ways this weekend, when they travel to Soham Town Rangers, could climb as high as second. Rangers will also be keen to pick up something after their four-one defeat against Romford last time out.

Fifth place Tilbury travel to Basildon United- only they don’t, as the match is being played at Parkside, home of Aveley. It was a kick off time of 11.30 AM, as of course usual tenants Grays Athletic kick off there at 3.

The Dockers long unbeaten run came to an end against Brentwood Town on 17th February, and although they bounced back to defeat Histon they fell to defeat against Maldon last time out, the Jammers gaining revenge for their reverse earlier in the season. The Bees will take confidence from taking Premier Division promotion challengers Folkestone Invicta to a penalty shootout in midweek, but need to pick up some league points as otherwise they could be bottom of the table by 5PM, if the two sides below them win.

Bottom side Romford travel to face sixth place Coggeshall Town. The Seed Growers are unbeaten in five, a spell which has coincided with the return to the club of striker Nnamdi Nwachuku, and have closed to within five points of the Playoffs, whilst Romford’s four game winning streak came to an end when AFC Sudbury beat them in midweek. Glenn Tamplin’s side are level on points with second bottom Felixstowe and Walton United, and victory could lift them two places dependent on other results. Match Postponed.

Great Wakering Rovers, in seventh place, travel to face ninth place Canvey island. Two wins have seen Rovers seemingly end their sticky patch and climb up the table, whilst the Gulls are looking for their first win in four, but have drawn their last two.

Three consecutive victories have seen AFC Sudbury climb to eighth place. Their young side will travel to face Witham Town, who drew against Dereham Town last time out. When the sides last met in November six goals were scored in a three-all draw.
Match postponed.

Dereham travel to face Brentwood, who are without a win in three but did pick up a draw at Aveley on Monday. The Magpies have gone five games without a win, and have slipped to eleventh, but still have nine points more than their hosts. This match will be played at AFC Sudbury, and will kick off at 12 noon.

Finally, Grays Athletic host Felixstowe and Walton United at Parkside. This is an important match for both sides, Athletic because they’ve lost their last six matches and are now closer to the relegation places than the playoffs, the Seasiders because anything less than a victory could see them end up on the bottom. They did win last time out, and if they are to avoid relegation might need to keep that form going.
