Armistice service for the fallen

Dulwich Hamlet's fans and officials are holding a memorial service on Friday night at Champion Hill and a minute's silence at the Ryman Premier club's home on Saturday to remember the nation's fallen before kicking off in the Buildbase FA Trophy.

To mark Armistice Day on 11 November and Remembrance Sunday this weekend, fans are being invited to attend a non-denominational memorial service in the boardroom where the club's own war memorial takes pride of place on the walls.

Put up in the early 1920s in the aftermath of the Great War by Hamlet founder Mr Lorraine ‘PA’ Wilson, a wreath will be laid at the memorial to the club's war dead and the many unknown Hamlet fans who gave their lives for their country in both world wars and other conflicts since.

Dulwich Hamlet chairman Liam Hickey said: “We hold a small service every year, and though there are not many of our fans still with us who can recall those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Second World War, it is important that we never forget we owe these brave young men who never returned home from the battlefields of Europe to Champion Hill.”

Community Initiatives committee member Mishi Morath said: “All of our fans are welcome to attend. At our last home match their donations to the tins of the Dulwich branch of the Royal British Legion, coupled with other fundraising from the club, raised just over three hundred pounds. Little things like this are what make it so special to be a Dulwich Hamlet supporter.”

Fans who attend the 7pm service can also watch England take on Scotland in Friday night's World Cup qualifier after officials also announced they were opening the clubhouse and bar at Champion Hill for the international.

The minute's silence on Saturday takes place before Gavin Rose's side host Southern League Chesham United in the second qualifying round of the Buildbase FA Trophy, kick-off 3pm.
