Becks reignite their survival fight- and do the Cannons promotion hopes no favours

By Ian Townsend

A big win for Beckenham Town on the Kent coast- as Hythe look to have earned a late point, only to see it depart

Hythe Town hosted bottom side Beckenham Town, and hoped to narrow the gap on the top five to seven points by winning one of their five games in hand- but in the end, they left Reachfields with nothing as Becks climbed to within six points of safety.

With only one win from ten, the visitors had looked as if their survival chances were as good as over, but they went ahead in added time at the end of the first half, Jeremiah Frimpong with the goal. It looked very much as if Becks had the match won as they remained ahead four minutes from time, but then, disaster, as a hand ball gave Frannie Collin the chance to level from the spot- and it was a chance they took.

Up the other end we went, and there were ninety minutes on the clock when the visitors were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Up stepped Finley Roberts- and he unleashed a strike which gave Jack West-Astuti in the home goal no chance at all, and sparked delighted celebrations amongst the travelling contingent.

The Cannons remain eighth, ten points away from the top five- and now with four games in hand. Becks still have six points to make up on third bottom Phoenix Sports, but now, finally, they have hope!

The sides meet again on April 6th.
