Blues Rocked!

By Ian Townsend

Late goals defeat the leaders as Bognor, Hastings and Horsham make it a perfect Sussex night- whilst Casuals woes worsen. Scholars reach the last four in the Velocity Cup

Bishop's Stortford travelled to Bognor Regis Town hoping to extend their lead at the top of the Pitching In Isthmian Premier to five points- but they were to be disappointed as the hosts came back to win in the closing stages.

It looked to be business as usual for the Blues when Ryan Charles gave them the lead six minutes before the break, and they were still in control as we entered the last twenty minutes. At that point, however, Rocks talisman Nathan Odokonyero decided he rather fancied scoring a goal- and he enjoyed the first one so much he got another, right at the end, to warm the hearts of the home faithful. That's twenty three goals for the season for the Bognor number nine, who has also scored in his last five matches.

Stortford remain at the summit, two points clear- but second place Enfield Town now have a game in hand, and fourth place Hornchurch- whose match at Wingate and Finchley was postponed- are four points back but with two games in hand. The Rocks are fifteenth, but are on an upward trajectory after winning their last three matches.

Horsham continued their fine run with victory at Corinthian-Casuals. The Hornets are now eight matches unbeaten- but only a late, late goal gave them three points last night. Jack Mazzone gave the visitors the lead just before half time, and the same player almost doubled the lead when heading against the post with seventeen minutes to go.

It seemed that miss might turn out to be costly when a defensive error saw Jared Myers equalise for Casuals with just two minutes left, but the ball was soon back at the other end and Lucas Rodrigues had the last word, taking three points back down the A24. That result leaves the Hornets ninth, five points behind fifth place Canvey Island- but it leaves Casuals in a dire predicament, six points from safety and second bottom having played one, two, three or even four games more than the sides around them. That's seven successive defeats for the side in pink and brown.

After a run of only one win in six matches, Hastings United got back to winning ways at Pilot Field, coming from behind to defeat Folkestone Invicta.

The visitors took an early lead, Ira Jackson putting them in front, but United levelled just after the half hour, Louis Collins getting two chances to finish and ensuring that he converted the second one. United applied most of the pressure but, just as it looked liked a draw was likely, Jack Dixon found Craig Stone who found the net, with seven minutes remaining.

Hastings sit six points away from the top five, with Invicta three points further back.

In the Velocity Cup, Potters Bar Town earned a Semi-Final slot with victory over Haringey Borough. The Scholars went ahead on twenty three minutes through Dejon Noel-Williams, but only seven minutes later were pegged back, a Scott Durojaiye penalty levelling for the visitors. Just two minutes after the restart Liam Hope scored against Borough for the second time in four days to give his side the lead once more, and twenty two minutes from time Noel-Williams popped up to add a third- and ensure a last four spot for the Scholars.
