Borg's back at Enfield

George Borg is preparing to make his Ryman League comeback on Saturday after Enfield Town named him as the successor to Steve Newing on Wednesday.

The Towners had been searching for a new manager since the middle of last month when Newing left. Borg, pictured, returns to the touchline at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium for their Ryman Premier clash with Carshalton Athletic nearly five years after last managing in Non-League as Boreham Wood caretaker in 2008.

Despite receiving 'applications of real quality', club officials say they were impressed by the 55-year-old's enthusiasm and experience in the game with a managerial career that has taken him to Barking, Chelmsford City, Chesham United, Harrow Borough, Enfield, Aldershot Town, Billericay Town, Hornchurch and Braintree Town.

After compassionate leave to look after a family member and coaching in the United States, Borg nearly returned to Middlesex to join the coaching staff at Enfield Town in June 2009 before further work commitments put paid to that appointment.

Borg, who kicked off his playing career at Millwall and went on to play for Wycombe Wanderers, Maidstone United, Dartford, Dulwich Hamlet, South Africa's Cape Town City and Carolina Lightning in the United States where he turned out alongside Rodney Marsh and Bobby Moore, is delighted with his appointment and looking forward to lifting his third from bottom squad clear of trouble.

He said: "It's great to be back at Enfield. It's a great club run by great people with fantastic supporters. I can't wait to get started. It will be a tough job, but I'm confident we can do it."

Chairman Paul Millington hailed Borg's arrival and thanked the club's father and son caretaking duo for holding the fort following Newing's departure.

"The club would like to thank Bryan and Pete Hammatt for stepping in whilst the process of selecting a new manager took place," said Millington. "They have served the club well over the years and leave with our very best wishes. George will need no introduction to many of us and has been successful at every club he has managed always taking them to a stronger position than when he joined."
