Boxing Day's Ryman North review

By David Watters

Ryman North leaders Cray Wanderers suffered a 2-1 defeat at Phoenix Sports and now head AFC Sudbury only on goal difference after the second-placed side won 2-1 at Witham Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Phoenix broke the Boxing Day deadlock five minutes into the second half with a goal from Ali Gordon, only for Andre McCollin to equalise from the spot seven minutes later.

But Russell Bedford`s spot-kick on 69 minutes settled the game in the home side`s favour to move them up to ninth, only four points behind fifth-placed Cheshunt.

After falling behind to a 13th minute Lewis Francis goal, Sudbury took advantage of Witham being reduced to ten-men after only 20 minutes at the Village Glass Stadium.

Lance Atkins was shown a straight red card and Craig Parker equalised from the resulting penalty. And a minute after half-time, Parker bagged his and Sudbury`s second to win the game.

Cheshunt were held to a goalless draw at bottom-markers Waltham Abbey, while Bury Town suffered a 2-1 Ram Meadow defeat to Dereham Town, who came back from being a 15th minute Justin Miller goal down to win, courtesy of Adam Smith on 77 minutes and then Luke Tuttle from the spot eight minutes from time.

Salim Relizani scored the only goal of the game at Julius Martin Lane nine minutes from the end for Soham Town Rangers against Wroxham, while Maldon & Tiptree and in-form Tilbury shared eight goals at the Wallace Binder Group Stadium.

Darren McQueen gave the Jammers a seventh minute lead that Harry Cook cancelled out nine minutes later. But Sam Newson on 21 minutes, Matt Lock from the spot nine minutes after and Newson again on 39 minutes saw the hosts go 4-1 up.

But the Dockers showed the spirit that has taken them fifteen games unbeaten to salvage a point with goals from Tony Martin a minute before the break, Danny Glozier from the spot on 66 minutes and then Martin again seven minutes from time.
