Can Chertsey increase their lead- and increase Casuals misery?

By Ian Townsend

The top two take on the bottom two, we’ve fifth v fourth, and no shortage of South Central intrigue- here’s our preview

Leaders Chertsey Town opened up a nine point gap at the top when hammering Guernsey in midweek, and the Curfews will be confident of another three points as bottom side Corinthian-Casuals make the trip to Alwyns Lane. Chertsey remain unbeaten since mid September, whilst Casuals start the weekend eight points from safety and without a win in seventeen matches. When the sides met at King George’s Field in December, the Curfews won six-nil.

Second place Marlow are on the road to face second bottom Binfield. Two defeats from their last four don’t detract too much from the fact that the other eight of their last ten matches ended in victory, but those defeats have let Chertsey open up a gap, and Marlow will not want it to get any wider. Binfield have gone five without a win- although three of them were draws- and are seven points from safety, albeit with two games in hand. They will have revenge on their minds- the last time the sides met, Marlow won eight-one!

Third place Leatherhead are in the Channel Islands, taking on Guernsey. The Tanners have lost only two of their last ten, whilst Guernsey will hope to quickly bounce back from their midweek hammering at the hands of the leaders, and were in fine form prior to that, with four wins from five. A late goal saw the Tanners defeat the Green Lions one-nil in December.

Southall have been on a poor run by their standards, one win from five seeing them slip down the table- but they are still seven points clear of sixth place Westfield in the battle for a play off place so won’t be too despondent. The All are on the road to the side one place and six points behind them, Raynes Park Vale- Vale also having their problems of late, having lost their last two, which makes their hold on a top five spot rather more precarious, Westfield only a point behind and having played a game fewer. They did defeat tomorrow’s opponents by a goal to nil when they met in December, however.

Westfield will hope to grab fifth spot, but they may need to win at Ascot United to do it. Field have only one defeat from ten although they’ve slowed down a little with only one win from four, that victory arriving against Hanworth Villa last weekend; whilst their hosts, the Yellas, are six unbeaten and in their best form for many a month. The two sides have already met twice this season in Cup and League, both taking a one-nil victory, but it is the Woking side looking for the league double. A United win could take them up to twelfth.

Ashford Town play host to seventh place South Park Reigate. The Tangerines are eleven points clear of the bottom two and were impressive in winning four-one at Sutton Common Rovers last time out, a second win from four. The Sparks ended a four match winless run by hitting six against Hartley Wintney last time out, and won’t have given up on a play off spot yet, with a six point gap to make up. They defeated the Tangerines three-nil in January.

Hartley Wintney will want to put that thrashing at the hands of South Park quickly behind them as they welcome the side one point and one place behind them, Thatcham Town. The Row have lost four of their last five, results which have severely hampered their play off challenge, whilst the Kingfishers are three unbeaten and have lost only one of their last seven. The sides last met little more than a month ago, two goals from Jordi Ebanda giving Town a two-nil win.

Hanworth Villa welcome Sutton Common Rovers. The Villains have a twelve point gap to make up on fifth place, and saw a five match unbeaten run come to an end against Westfield last time out; whilst Rovers have a five match winless run under their belts from which they’ve taken two points, but with a fifteen point gap between themselves and the danger zone have some breathing space. Villa won their last encounter by two goals to one.

Uxbridge travel to Chipstead. The Chips are desperate for points, as whilst they have a seven point lead over second bottom Binfield they’ve played two games more, and are without a win since New Years Day- that’s twelve matches, from which they’ve amassed three points. The travelling Red Army will be feeling rather more positive, as their side has won its last three matches comfortably, scoring nine goals in the process, a run which has seen them climb to eleventh. The first meeting between the sides ended in a two-one Uxbridge victory.

Badshot Lea hope to finally be back at home- they last managed to play a home league match on February 6th- and will be hoping to get back to winning ways as Northwood come to call. The Baggies, who start the day in twelfth, have as many as five games in hand over the sides around them, and are nine points ahead of their opponents, who are fifteenth. The Woods have only one defeat from five, and are now fifteen points above the drop zone, but will want some revenge for a three-nil Velocity Cup defeat in October. The two sides are about to get very well acquainted, as the return fixture is scheduled for Tuesday evening.
