Can the Yellows narrow the gap?

By Ian Townsend

We’ve only four matches in Pitching In Isthmian North tonight, but each one is of vital importance. Here’s our preview.

With two defeats in ten matches it would be ridiculous to say that AFC Sudbury have lost their way, but such has been the form of title challengers Hashtag United that the Yellows find themselves seven points behind the leaders, albeit with a game in hand- which they will play this evening, as they travel to Stowmarket Town. After two matches without a win the Yellows got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory over Hullbridge Sports on Saturday, whilst tonights hosts were ending a five match winless run with victory over East Thurrock United. Stow have fallen to seventh, four points behind fifth place Grays Athletic and fourth place Felixstowe & Walton United, and with both of those sides in action tonight won’t want to let that gap get any bigger. The sides have already met twice in the cup this season, the Yellows progressing after a replay, and after tonight are scheduled to meet twice more in the next month!

If that match isn’t big enough for you, we’ve more! Fourth place Felixstowe & Walton United welcome third place Lowestoft Town. Six points separate the two sides, and although the Seasiders have a fine home record the Trawler Boys are rather good on the road, so this one is rather difficult to predict. The Trawler Boys are in fine form, having taken twenty five points- one defeat- from their last ten matches, whilst the hosts will want to bounce back from defeat in a seven goal thriller at New Salamis at the weekend.

Any Seasiders slipup could see Grays Athletic go above them into fourth. Athletic face the task of travelling to take on a confident Basildon United side, the Bees having gone a long way towards dispelling any relegation fears by winning their last three matches and moving thirteen points clear of the drop zone. Athletic are five unbeaten, have won their last three, and have conceded only one goal in their last four hundred and fifty minutes of action.

In the lower reaches of the table, Gorleston welcome Witham Town to Lowestoft. The Greens have opened up a five point gap over the bottom four, and could go above the side directly above them- tonight’s opponents- if they could pick up three points. Having won their last three they won’t be short on confidence, whilst Town have taken only one point from their last three matches and need to get back to winning ways.
