Champion Robins!

By Ian Townsend

A four-nil win and a Chertsey slip guaranteed Bracknell Town the title- whilst it’s still all to play for in the race to join them in Step Three.

Our Champions-elect Bracknell Town knew they could actually be crowned champions if they were to win at Ashford Town and second place Chertsey Town were to slip up, the Curfews entertaining Hanwell Town. They’d fulfilled their side of the bargain by half time, four-nil up after Temi Eweka, Dave Tarpey, returning former Tangerine Aaron McLeish-White and the ever-reliable Seb Bowerman put them out of sight. That was that for the goals, and it was then just a wait to see whether the Curfews could beat the Geordies. They couldn’t, and it was a title for Town with six games remaining- the gap already an unassailable twenty one points.

The Curfews match with the Geordies was otherwise our match of the day, second versus third- and the Geordies would have delighted Bracknell fans as much as their own by going two-nil up in the first half, Sam Saunders with the first and Dernell Wynter adding the second. The Curfews had to respond quickly, and they did, Jake Baxter pulling one back on fifty seven minutes, but then made their own lives more difficult when substitute Scott Day saw red fifteen minutes after entering the fray. That turned out to be that, the Geordies closing to within a point of their hosts and opening a four point gap between themselves and sixth place.

Bedfont Sports have been in magnificent form, and would have been supremely confident as they travelled to bottom side Staines Town, who can’t win for toffee (other sweet food items that will pull your fillings out are available). Rightly so, as they were two up by the break, Darryl Sanders with his twenty second goal of the campaign and Ricky Wellard with his eighth. Joe Jackson was Steppin Out with a third eight minutes after the break, but the hosts then got back into the game as Bruno Brito got one back, and were given another boost when Gary Ross saw red for Sports. Any hope was soon extinguished as Jackson added another to make it four-one, although a late Leonardo De Carvalho Pedro goal gave the hosts some pride.

Basingstoke Town were the third of three sides who started the weekend on fifty seven points, but they had a nightmare of a first half at home to Sutton Common Rovers. Their visitors, third from bottom but three games unbeaten and looking much improved, lost five-one the last time the two met, but were two up by the break as David Manu and Tony Halsey shocked the Stoke faithful. Rovers got a third after the break, Christophe Aziamale ensuring they climb up to fifteenth and do their survival hopes a power of good.

Uxbridge have slipped out of the top five at entirely the wrong time, an inconsistent run which has seen them win only three of their previous ten chiefly responsible. The Red Army flew to Guernsey and had much to celebrate early on, Victor Osobu opening the scoring after just seven minutes, but the Green Lions grabbed a point when Tom Jackson scored nineteen minutes from time. Uxbridge are a point behind fifth place Basingstoke, having played a game more.

Marlow welcomed Tooting & Mitcham United, the two sides needing the points for entirely different reasons. The hosts had dropped seven points behind the top five and if their play off chances weren’t to bite the dust entirely surely need a victory; whilst the Terrors have terrified only their own fans this season, slipping to fourth from bottom. Marlow took the lead on seventeen minutes through Charlie Samuel, and that turned out to be the only goal, ensuring that Marlow’s play off gap has reduced to four points, and that the Terrors drop into a relegation play off spot.

Chalfont St Peter hoped to keep their- increasingly slim- hopes of avoiding relegation alive as they welcomed South Park. The Saints were three unbeaten, and went ahead just eight minutes from time, Man-Mountain Melford (Simpson) getting the opening- and only- goal. The Saints are six points away from even a chance of safety.

Eleventh hosted tenth as Northwood welcomed Chipstead. A Keagan Cole penalty put the Woods ahead, but Andy Kabuikusomo kept up his fine recent record by equalising eight minutes before the break- that’s ten goals in his last eight. That was that.

Finally, Westfield welcomed Thatcham Town. The draw kings of Woking really needed three points, but they were quickly behind, Cameron Rohart-Brown putting the visitors ahead after just nine minutes. That turned out to be the only goal, and the Kingfishers have opened up an eight point gap over the bottom three, whilst it’s only two points for Field- and Tooting & Mitcham United, the side directly below them, have a game in hand.
