The 46-year-old, pictured, was already combining his work guiding the Jammers with a full-time coaching role at their League One neighbours last season and resigned on Thursday after agreeing to step up to become John McGreal's number two at the Colchester Community Stadium.
Appointed in December 2015 as the successor to David Wright, ironically after Wright left to become number two to former Colchester boss Kevin Keen, Ball was the Essex club's third manager last season.
After kicking off his reign with a 2-1 derby win over Heybridge Swifts in January, he went on to win 13 of his 22 matches in charge, losing just three, as he led the Jammers to seventh place finish in Ryman North.
Maldon & Triptree
Following Colchester's relegation, Ball will be working alongside the club's former U21's boss McGreal in League Two next season and the Jammers paid tribute to their former manager in a statement confirming his departure.
A spokesman said: "Everyone associated with Maldon & Tiptree Football Club would like to place on record our thanks to Steve for his hard work and his run of results whilst in charge of The Jammers and we wish him all the very best in his new role. The club will make no further comment at this time."
