Delayed debut worth the wait

Witham Town’s assistant manager Brad King is looking forward to seeing experienced keeper Nicky Eyre in action when he returns from suspension after signing from Ryman North neighbours and rivals Heybridge Swifts this week.

The 28-year-old, pictured, is suspended for Sunday’s trip to Erith & Belvedere and King, who saw Danny Sambridge leave Witham for Heybridge last month, is sure it will be worth the wait to see the keeper he replaced at Scraley Road make his debut.

King told Town’s website: "Having played in goal myself, for me he is one of, if not the best goalkeeper in the league. What impressed us most is that he was keen to play for and contacted us having moved down the road and believes in what we are trying to do.

"It's important the club signed another long term goalkeeper and I believe the club are fortunate to have two top keepers in Nicky and Guesty [Martyn Guest]. Since releasing Danny Sambridge, Sam Baxter has played on loan from West Ham United and performed well in the last two games but it's important the club look long term and we couldn't miss the opportunity to sign Nicky."

Braintree-born Eyre, 28, kicked off his career at Tottenham and was capped by England at Schoolboy and Under 17 level before going on to play for Grays Athletic, Dagenham and Redbridge, Rushden and Diamonds, St Albans City, Chelmsford City, Bishops Stortford, AFC Sudbury and Swifts.
