Early exit for ex-Wasps boss Funnell

By David Watters

Former Brighton striker and East Grinstead Town manager Simon Funnell has parted company with Ryman League returnees Horsham.

Funnell, pictured, was brought in by Hornets manager Dom di Paola at the start of the summer to join his touchline team following his side's promotion back into Ryman South as Southern Combination Football League champions.

Funnell took the Wasps into the Ryman League in 2014 after guiding them to the runners-up spot in the Sussex County League. After leaving by mutual consent in November 2014 he went to become assistant manager at Chipstead last season before enjoying a brief spell in charge of Shoreham in the Southern Combination Premier Division.

In a statement on the newly promoted club's website, Di Paola paid tribute to Funnell who left Gorings Mead on Monday and is believed to be keen on making a return to management.

He said: “Simon is used to being the main man so it was always going to be hard for him. He’s a terrific coach and a good bloke so we jumped at the chance of bringing him in and we wish him well for the future."
