FA Cup First Round Replay

Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders was given a cuddle by his proud dad before being mobbed by his squad and the Ryman Premier club's ecstatic fans after his side's historic victory over Stevenage Borough in the FA Cup on Thursday night.

For the first time since the former Football League club reformed in 1992, the Stones are in the second round of the world's oldest cup competition after millions watching on TV saw them see off their League Two opponents 2-1 in the replay at the Gallagher Stadium.

After drawing 0-0 in Hertfordshire, the Stones booked up a trip to Conference Premier Wrexham in the next round with just three minutes left on the clock when Frannie Collin struck.

Collin had earlier fired the Stones ahead after two minutes when he was on hand to tuck the ball into the net after Stevenage keeper Chris Day spilled an early shot. The visitors had got back on level terms within a couple of minutes of the restart when Darius Charles drilled in a smart volley on the turn.

Afterwards a delighted Saunders told viewers on BT Sport: "This has been the dream of the owner, to stage nights like this for the fans. We'll keep our heads down this weekend now and concentrate on the league which is our priority and then start thinking about preparing for Wrexham."

As well as collecting a guaranteed £33,750 television fee and the gate receipts from a sell-out crowd, the win also earned the Kent club another £18,000 from the FA Cup's prize fund.
