Fans and clubs mourn Browne

By David Watters

Aveley, Enfield Town and Grays Athletic are among a number of Ryman League clubs mourning the passing of Steve Browne.

The respected former player, coach and manager, pictured, at a number of other Ryman and Non-League clubs including Boreham Wood, Dover Athletic, Potters Bar Town, Slough Town and Wealdstone, passed away over New Year aged 45 after losing a long battle with cancer.

After managing Aveley, Browne was assistant manager at Enfield for the second half of the 2008-09 campaign before moving on to Grays Athletic and a Towners spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

Since battling bowel cancer, Browne had become an ambassador for the Men's Health Forum and last year supported the charity's Know The Score campaign after it teamed up with the Professional Footballers' Association and the League Managers' Association.

Social media has been flooded with tributes for Browne since his death was reported on New Year's Day. Evo-Stik League Southern Slough Town, where he managed and played, tweeted: "All at Slough Town were saddened to learn of the passing of former first team player and manager Steve Browne."
