Five hundred and ninety five days...new Division...new goalkeeper

By Ian Townsend

We welcome back Guernsey tomorrow

The last time the Guernsey played in the Isthmian League was, in many ways, a day to forget, as Ashford United arrived in the Channel Islands on 22nd February last year and left with a six-nil win- yet it was also, as it turned out, a day to remember, as it will have been five hundred and ninety five days since that defeat when the Green Lions kick off against Sutton Common Rovers tomorrow afternoon.

That Ashford United match was in the Pitching In Isthmian South East Division, but the club have since been moved westwards just a little and will be playing, for the first time, in the South Central- and they will be doing it with a new goalkeeper as James Walker moves over the sea on loan from Bristol City.

James is part of the Under 18 squad at Ashton Gate, but this isn't his first taste of non league as he has already had a loan spell with Bath City.

The Guernsey squad have only had one pre-season match due to covid rules, and that against a local side. We'll see whether the enforced lay-off has hampered them when they kick off at 2PM tomorrow.
