Manager pays the price for poor start

Cray Wanderers

Assistant manager Mike Paye and coach Gary Abbott have been handed temporary charge of Cray Wanderers after Keith Bird paid the price for the club’s poor start to their Ryman North campaign on Wednesday.

Bird, pictured, took charge at Hayes Lane last season as the successor to veteran manager Ian Jenkins. His departure by mutual consent from the second oldest football club in the world follows a string of poor results and just two wins this term that have left the Wands languishing at the foot of the table

Club chairman Gary Hillman said: "The club would like to thank Keith for all is hard work and effort over the Last year and wish him all the best in the future."

Paye arrived with Bird from Bromley where the pair had successfully worked together running the club's reserves and U18s for nearly eight years.

Together with former England C and Cray striker Abbott, he'll take charge for the first time on Saturday when the pair take the Wands to Needham Market in Ryman North hoping to turn around the club's fortunes.
