Number One Woods!

By Ian Townsend

Northwood go top, Cufews hit five, Moles and Stoke get four, and we've important wins for Southall, Tanners, Marlow and Swans. It's our Pitching In Isthmian South Central round up.

Westfield welcomed Northwood to Woking Park, a clash of the top two no less. Prior to the match the hosts had scored twelve goals and conceded only one, with impressive League walloping’s of expected promotion candidates Leatherhead and Basingstoke Town, whilst Woods were very good indeed in wins over Bedfont Sports and Tooting & Mitcham United- and in their opening cup victory over South Park Reigate. Woods took four points from six against these opponents last season, and were excellent on the road- and even though they fell behind on thirteen minutes, through Nathaniel Mensah, the game had turned on its head by the break, Ronan Hutchins, Sydney Ibie (from the spot) and Keagan Cole sending them in three-one up. The second half had no further goals, but the Woods went to the top of the table.

Title favourites Chertsey Town were on the road to Sutton Common Rovers. The two matches last season went the way of Chertsey, who won both with a seven-one aggregate- and they started in the same manner this season, too. Reece Cole put them ahead on nine minutes, and then just before the break Rovers went down to ten men, Matthew Tanton with a second yellow. The Curfews immediately took advantage, Lee Lewis delivering a four minute hat trick with goals in fifty three, fifty four and fifty seven minutes, and then added a fifth just before the end of the match, Trevan Robinson confirming their climb to second.

Marlow, fresh from their TV heroics last weekend, were on the road to Tooting & Mitcham United, where there were unlikely to be any BBC cameras. Unbeaten so far this season, and with Dawid Rogalski already on four goals, they faced a Terrors side whose only win from four matches so far came on the opening day, when they defeated Cobham in the Cup. The opening goal didn’t go to Rogalski, instead it went to Aaron Watkins immediately after the restart, and they’d been playing against ten men for twenty two minutes, Leevi Bassett departing for the Terrors. Marlow did the double over the Terrors last season, after their three previous meetings had ended in draws, and they are half way to doing it again as Watkins goal was the only one- his side in fourth.

Uxbridge travelled to face Walton & Hersham- a third ‘H’ opponent in four for the Red Army after matches against Hassocks and Hanworth Villa. The Swans had been scoring goals for fun, fifteen far in five matches prior to this one- but they were helped on their way in this one, visiting keeper Tyler Tobin seeing red nine minutes before the break. The Swans were already one up by then, Oliver Twum with that goal, and they were two up almost immediately, Eddie Simon doubling their advantage. John Gilbert made it three just before the break, before the visitors got one back with nine minutes to go, Victor Osobu reducing the arrears. It didn’t help, and the Swans are sixth.

Binfield had taken four points from their opening two matches, and a cup win last weekend saw them unbeaten as they welcomed a Merstham side still looking for that first victory. The Moatsiders were buried by the Moles, who scored two goals in each half for a fine four-nil victory. Harvey Harry and Liam Tack got the first two, Jonathan Denton made it three midway through the second half, and right before the end Johnny Efedje made it four to end a miserable afternoon for the visitors. The Moles are up to third.

Southall welcomed Guernsey, the Green Lions playing only their second match of the season after an opening day goalless draw at Thatcham Town. The hosts weren’t all that welcoming on the pitch, scoring three second half goals to pick up a comfortable three points. They came within a six minute spell, Luke Heneghan, Arell Amu and Louis Stead effectively ending the contest. Southall are seventh.

Thatcham Town, who had drawn their two opening matches, would have been happy with a draw today, as Leatherhead got their first league win, two-one. Josh Webb Put the Tanners in front nine minutes before the break, Elliott Buchanen got his first Tanners goal midway through the second half, and although Corey Hathaway got one back six minutes from time the equaliser didn’t arrive, and Leatherhead moved above the Kingfishers into thirteenth.

Hanworth Villa were impressive in defeating Chertsey Town in the Cup last weekend, and were unbeaten after four matches in all competitions, but they were well beaten by a Basingstoke Town side who now have ten goals in their last two matches. George Reid and Bradley Wilson scored midway through the first half, with Wilson and Ezio Touray adding midway through the second. Stoke climb to tenth.

Finally for Saturday, Bedfont Sports and Chipstead still search for their first victories after a goalless draw.

On Friday evening, Ashford Town defeated South Park Reigate. Two first half goals for Lewis Flatman- the first in the first minute- were halved by a strike from Etahn Ford for the Sparks, but Danyaal Iqbal made sure of three Tangerine points in the second half. That's an incredible SEVEN GOALS IN FIVE MATCHES for Flatman.
