Pitching In Isthmian League- supporters predictions 2021-22: Barking

By Ian Townsend

It’s time for the story of the Blues. We’re off to Barking, with Trevor Gilbert our host.

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-20 (or 22) will be worked into a final table which you will see just before the big kick off. North Division time once more, and Trevor gives us a snapshot of Barking.

1. Thinking about last season- what there was of it- were there any highlights for you?

Over the few fixtures we had we actually had some very good results last year- in cup and league! Our penalties victory over Kings Langley in the FA Cup which avenged the previous season's loss to them was a big result, as they are at a higher level and that was our first victory against a team from a higher level since we moved back to the Isthmian League! There was also a penalty victory against Sittingbourne in the FA Trophy which was highly enjoyable after a tight match. In terms of league matches there was a 3-0 victory against Waltham Abbey, who at the time were top of the league and flying, but we totally played them off the park that night.

2. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2021-22 campaign?

Hopefully all of them! We've now got one of the most experienced back-lines in the league - with the signings of Jay Leader, Elliot Omozusi, James Folkes, Barney Williams and James Shaw in goal. All of these have come from either playing at a higher level, or have recently played at a higher level. There's good defensive cover behind them too, with Oliver Pain, Louis Dillon and new signing Peter Ojemen. We've also improved our midfield with the signing of Olumide Oluwatimilehin who was again playing at a higher level previously. Up front, there's even more experience with Charlie McDonald! On the other end of the spectrum, Jess Norey and Kieran Jones are exciting talents progressing from our U23s.

3. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

Justin always tells us the first aim is to not get relegated - and that always stands true but with the players we've got this season they won't be aiming for that. I expect that the league is going to be very tight this year but I think there is the quality in the team to make the playoffs.

4. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

Hashtag United and Stowmarket Town are the two new teams this season - both are very good teams, it will be interesting to test ourselves against them. We also have a horrific record against Witham Town and it is long overdue that we change that!

5. What is your favourite away ground?

The safe answer is Aveley! Canvey Island is always a nice trip and they have a great friendly fan base who treat you well. AFC Sudbury also have a very nice set-up, with a great scoreboard.
6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

Romford are the local rivals, who are groundsharing this season with us. Basildon United are also long-standing rivals, going back to our time in the Essex Senior League, with title challenges and some feisty matches. I also consider Witham Town a rival due to our previously discussed abysmal record against them - I don't think they care much though, I reckon they love it!

7. What advice would you give to any away supporter visiting you for the first time?

As seems to be the case every season with us, we are currently renovating the bar! We've made it larger by knocking some walls through and we are currently in the process of relaying the floor so it looks smart!

We accept cash and card both at the turnstile and in the bar, and tickets will also be available online throughout the season.

8. Who is your favourite player of all time (for your club)- and why?

The answer as it is every year - Ben O'Brien! He's now up to 391 appearances.

9. Who will be in the top five at the end of the season?

Maldon & Tiptree, Heybridge Swifts, Coggeshall Town, Aveley, Barking
