Pitching In Isthmian Performance of the Month Awards, August 2021

By Ian Townsend

Our League sponsors, Pitching In, also sponsor our Performance of the Month Awards. Here are the winners for August

We’ve actually finished a month of football, rather miraculously. Here’s hoping for many more of those to come! August delivered some fabulous performances, and after the usual amount of arguing amongst our panel these are the ones that came out on top.

Pitching In Isthmian Premier

Worthing, our title favourites, looked to be back to their best form and must have been confident as they welcomed local rivals Bognor Regis Town to the Crucial Environmental Stadium. Well they weren’t confident for long, as the Rocks stunned a large majority of the two thousand, one hundred and one present by scoring two goals within five minutes midway through the second half to take victory by two goals to nil. Ashton Leigh and Kayne Diedrick-Roberts did the damage, but the entire team deservedly take our plaudits.

Pitching In Isthmian North

There were some fine performances from North Division sides, but we went for one from the FA Cup. Only two sides from the Division had defeated Maldon & Tiptree at Park Drive since the start of the 2019-20 campaign, and the Jammers had started the season with a seven-nil thrashing of Romford, but when Aveley came to call on August 21st it was the Millers who progressed to the next round of the FA Cup, Alex Akrofi scoring the only goal of the game. Given that the previous sides to knock the Jammers out of the cup were Morecambe and Newport County, and that those defeats happened in the First and Second Rounds respectively, perhaps this might be Aveley’s year for a cup run.

Pitching In Isthmian South Central

On August Bank Holiday Monday Ashford Town made the short trip to face rivals Staines Town, and delivered a superb performance, walloping the Swans by five goals to nil. The Tangerines saw Jack French, Matt Bunyan, Perry Coles and George Spiers breach the Staines rearguard, and when the final goal- an own goal- went in it perhaps summed up the Swans entire afternoon. Congratulations to the Tangerines, who pick up our August prize.

Pitching In Isthmian South East Division

Herne Bay hosted Three Bridges on Saturday 28th August still looking for their first victory- and they delivered it in some style, smashing six goals past their opponents with no reply. JJ Naiwo, Dan Johnson, Zak Ansah (2), Chinedu McKenzie and Dean Grant had a marvellous time, as did the home support. And now the club will have a nice trophy to help them remember the occasion!

Pitching In is a Grassroots Sports Investment Programme launched by GVC, the multi-national sports-betting and gaming group which owns Ladbrokes and Coral. The partnership covers all three leagues that make up Steps 3 & 4 of the National Leagues System.

Pitching In has been set up with the objective of supporting, protecting and encouraging grassroots sports in the UK through a range of initiatives.

In addition to financial support, a key focus of the partnership will be to facilitate and encourage members of the community to become volunteers, and do some pitching in of their own. A Pitching In volunteering scheme will be established to link GVC’s Ladbrokes and Coral shop colleagues with their local clubs.
