Promotion or bust for Blues boss

Billericay Town manager Craig Edwards is vowing to step down at the end of next season if he hasn't guided the Blues to promotion from the Ryman League's top flight to National League South.

Edwards, who has been in charge at New Lodge since 2010, set the promotion deadline ahead of the club's Christmas fixture programme.

In an interview with www.echo-news.co.uk, the Blues boss, pictured, said he felt rejuvenated following the recent investment of businessman and his former Barkingside captain Glenn Tamplin.

He said: “I am not worried about this going wrong. It is great to see that Glenn has the drive that matches mine.

“Every summer I lose my team despite doing well the previous year but we always go again and we always overachieve but now we have something to build towards. If we didn’t win the league next year I would walk away. We can be a league team in six years and that is hugely exciting.”

The Town boss also insisted that Billericay would not be able to survive in the second-tier of Non-League football without Tamplin’s investment.

“If we went up this year we would come straight back down. We could not live at that level on £2,000 a week. People say we are there to be shot at but that was said in the past and I said to the players then that there is nothing better than walking into an opposition bar knowing that you are the best. I want that to be us again.”

He added: “The supporters are so behind us right now. There is a feel good factor at the club and it is because of Glenn. There is a buzz about it all and that carries onto the pitch and onto me. I feel uplifted and that is down to Glenn and the supporters – they really are so important."
