Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

There was a full fixture list in the Ryman Premier on Saturday as the league escaped the worst effects of the wet weather that hit most of the rest of the country, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Hampton & Richmond Borough returned to the top of the table with a 4-3 victory over Leiston at the Beveree.

Two late Leiston goals gave the hosts some anxious moments but they never looked like losing after a thumping first half that saw them race into a three-goal lead through Moussa Diara after 18 minutes and Jamal Lowe on 29 and 44 minutes.

Leiston's Patrick Brothers reduced the arrears direct from a corner six minutes into the second half but when Hampton added a fourth through Nicke Kabamba nine minutes from time it looked like game, set and match.

But two goals in stoppage time almost brought Leiston an unlikely draw. First, Stuart Boardley's corner was stopped on the line allowing Joe Jefford to score and then a Gareth Heath corner flew direct into the net.

Overnight leaders Dulwich Hamlet produced a poor performance that gifted lowly VCD Athletic a 3-2 victory.

Ryan Moss gave Hamlet a 32nd minute lead that Ricky Sappleton cancelled out five minutes later. Sappleton then bagged his second to give the relegation-threatened hosts a 42nd minute lead, only for Nyren Clunis to take the sides into the break on level terms with the equaliser right on the whistle. The Vickers won it when Sappleton completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute.

East Thurrock United remain in third spot but suffered a 2-1 defeat at Rookery Hill to mid-table Merstham.

Top scorer Sam Higgins`s 23rd goal of the season gave the Rocks a 27th minute lead. However, Tutu Henriques equalised seven minutes before the break and then Charlie Penny won it for the Moatsiders with 19 minutes left to play.

Tonbridge Angels occupy the final play-off spot and they added more misery to second-bottom Farnborough after winning 2-1 at Cherrywood Road.

It was goalless right until 13 minutes from time when new loan signing George Hallahan gave Boro the lead. Sub Luke Allen levelled three minutes later and Tom Parkinson popped up with Angels` winner with less than three minutes remaining.

Kingstonian are just a point behind Angels after seeing off the challenge of another top five contender, Grays Athletic.

But it was an 84th minute dismissal of Grays` Joao Carlos that proved crucial after Roman Michael-Percil had put the visitors in front at Kingsmeadow after just nine minutes.

George Wells equalised nine minutes later but when Carlos was sent-off for a second bookable offence two minutes after that, Andre McCollin pounced to win it for K`s.

Billericay Town are seventh, two points behind Kingstonian after winning 1-0 at Wheatsheaf Park against a Staines Town side who are now just four points above the drop zone.

Onome Sodje gave the visitors a 22nd minute lead. Five minutes before half-time George Bevan high challenge on Pat Cox saw the Billericay defender shown a straight red card.

Staines then had a great chance to level matters when they were awarded a penalty when new boy Trevor Mureto was brought down in the box by Alex Stephenson. But Cox`s effort was well saved by Billericay `keeper Jack Giddens.

Enfield Town maintained their outside play-off hopes with a 3-0 win at Leatherhead.

Bobby Devyne put Town in front after 16 minutes and doubled his and his side`s tally nine minutes later. Cory Whitely virtually ensured the points went away with a third goal just before the break.

Bottom-markers Lewes shared a goalless Dripping Pan draw with sixth-bottom Needham Market, while third-bottom Brentwood Town shared six goals at home against mid-table Canvey Island.

But it was a `game of two halves` as the visitors led 3-0 at half-time after goals from Tony Stokes after 18 minutes, Leon Gordon against his old club on 34 minutes and a Steve Sheehan far post header a minute before the break.

Brentwood began their comeback on 58 minutes as Tom Richardson beat Lawrence Yiga before finishing well, and with 15 minutes remaining the deficit was reduced to one by Bradley Nobbs.

And the comeback was complete in the 90th minute as Martyn Stokes headed in to seal a vital point for Brentwood.

Wingate & Finchley went nap at home to Burgess Hill Town.

It was 3-0 at half-time with goals from Tommy Tejan-Sie after eight minutes, Billy Healey from the spot five minutes later and Rob Laney on 31 minutes.

Healey scored his second of the game to make it 4-0 just seven minutes after the restart and Alex Addai made it a nap hand just past the hour-mark, with Will Miles netting a stoppage time consolation for the Hillians.

Metropolitan Police pushed Hendon further towards the bottom end of the table after a comfortable 3-0 Imber Court victory, Leon Smith proving to be the Met`s hero with a hat-trick in the 12th, 40th and 76th minutes.
