Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

Ryman League Premier Division

It`s still all to play for in the Ryman League Premier Division after Saturday`s round of matches that saw leaders Maidstone United beaten by second-placed Hendon, who are now in a great position, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of their best attendance since 2007 – 759 at Earlsmead – the Greens now have the title in their hands as they are five points behind the Stones having played two games less.

Whatever happens, Gary McCann's side are guaranteed a top three spot. But it was the visitors who took the lead in the 15th minute through Jay May.

Hendon pulled back on level terms three minutes before half-time with an Andre Da Costa free-kick and what proved to be the winner came just eight minutes into the second half when Kezie Ibe was pulled back by Tom Mills and Sam Murphy converted the resulting penalty.

Margate can still pip both but it would need a big swing in the Kent side's favour, although their 1-0 win at Peacehaven & Telscombe, courtesy of a 47th minute Zac Attwood effort, keeps them alive, three points behind Hendon.

Dulwich Hamlet let another two points slip at fourth-bottom Witham Town as they maintained fourth place but saw the pack behind close in further.

Dulwich battled hard for their point in a goalless draw on a very poor pitch.

Enfield Town are fifth, two points clear of Grays Athletic, after beating Bognor Regis Town 2-0 at the QEII Stadium.

Cory Whitely proved to be Town`s hero in front of a crowd of 533, scoring twice in the 49th and 57th minutes.

The defeat for the Rocks leaves them just about out of the top five race now. However, Grays, Kingstonian, Leiston, Metropolitan Police, Wingate & Finchley and East Thurrock United are all just about still in it.

The K`s could have done with more than a 1-1 home draw with Canvey Island, whose Steve Smith cancelled out Jesse Darko`s 45th minute penalty just eight minutes from time, while Phil Page's 15th minute goal earned Leatherhead all the points against Leiston.

And the Met moved above East Thurrock in emphatic style by hammering the Rocks 5-0 at Imber Court, with Charlie Collins bagging a brace and Jake Reid, Jay Lovett and Joe Turner singles.

At the other end, Hampton & Richmond Borough picked up what could prove to be a valuable point after coming from behind against Billericay Town.

But with the sides below the Beavers in the table also enjoying a profitable day, the pressure remains on to stay in the Ryman Premier.

Billericay went ahead after 21 minutes when Ricky Sappleton kept his composure from the penalty spot to make it 1-0 before Moussa Diarra equalised 19 minutes from time.

Wins for Harrow Borough, VCD Athletic and Tonbridge Angels means Hampton now sit just once place outside of the drop zone with four games to go.

Harrow beat Lewes 1-0 at the Dripping Pan, courtesy of a last-gasp Lewis Driver goal, while VCD outgunned already-doomed Bury Town 3-2 at Ram Meadow, with Michael Power with two and Ben Payne for the Vickers and Russell Short and Phil Weavers scoring for the Blues.

Tonbridge added another nail into AFC Hornchurch`s coffin, leaving the Urchins second-bottom and seven points adrift of the safety-mark – a year after losing the play-off final for promotion!

Jerome Sobers and Tom Parkinson in the first half and Billy Medlock and sub Royce Greenidge in the second, sealed a 4-0 Angels triumph.
