Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

Hampton & Richmond Borough achieved the one point they needed to clinch the Ryman League Premier Division championship on the final Saturday of the regular season, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a terrific crowd of 2,376, it was a day of differing emotions as visitors Enfield Town missed out on the play-offs as a consequence of this goalless draw.

As it happened, with Dulwich Hamlet losing 2-1 to a Needham Market side who ensured safety, Town could have made it into the top five had they managed to spoil the Beavers' day.

Second-placed Bognor Regis Town kept Hampton on their toes, beating Hendon 4-0 at Nyewood Lane in front of 510 to seal second spot.

Jason Prior gave the Rocks an early third minute lead that Alfie Rutherford doubled after 25 minutes. Prior added his second and Bognor`s third five minutes before the break, with a fourth coming in the very last minute from Connor Tighe.

Just as nerve-tingling was the battle to avoid joining already-relegated VCD Athletic, Lewes and Brentwood Town.

Needham Market faced Dulwich knowing only a win would do but even that wouldn`t be enough if Burgess Hill Town won at home to fourth-placed Tonbridge Angels.

In front of a season`s best 502 at Bloomfields, Mark Morsley`s Marketmen did their part, beating Hamlet with goals from Luke Ingram after 36 and 60 minutes, with Dipo Akinyemi replying after 62 minutes. And then news filtered through that the Hillians had been held to a 0-0 draw at Leylands Park in front of 576 so it is the Sussex outfit who finish in a relegation spot.

Kingstonian finished the season in seventh but suffered a final day defeat to a Merstham side who deserve massive credit for finishing tenth in their first season at this level.

Fabio Saraiva opened the scoring in the 21st minute for the Moatsiders, and nothing much else happened until Charlie Penny saw a penalty saved by Rob Tolfrey near the end of the game. Then came three goals in a strange final minute, Tutu Henriques doubling the hosts' lead, quickly followed by a goal back by Reece Beckles, quickly followed by Penny atoning for his penalty miss to confirm victory.

Leiston`s fine 3-0 away win at Imber Court against Metropolitan Police secured an eighth-place finish - the best ever placing in their 136-year history.

Tom Winter fired the Blues into a 15th minute lead, a lead that was doubled on 27 minutes by Jake Taylor. Gareth Heath's 59th minute effort sealed the points.

Billericay Town are ninth in the final placings after they eased to a 4-0 New Lodge win over Wingate & Finchley.

A good crowd of 473 saw Tom Derry help himself to a 26-minute hat-trick in the opening half. Conor Hubble added the fourth seven minutes from time.

Elsewhere, bottom-markers VCD Athletic finished on a winning note against Grays Athletic, Tyrus Gordon-Young netting a hat-trick with goals in the fourth, 40th and 81st minutes with Malachi Hudson scoring the other on the hour-mark. Christian Papadimos on 48 minutes and Jermaine Osei on 61 minutes, replied for a youthful Essex side.

Second-bottom Lewes shared a last day 1-1 draw against an East Thurrock United side who would have finished second had they won.

Sam Higgins with his 37th goal of the season gave the Rocks a ninth minute lead that Henry Muggeridge cancelled out in front of 505 at the Dripping Pan.

Farnborough`s fate is still uncertain but they ensured they didn`t finish in the bottom four.

They won 3-0 against already down Brentwood at Cherrywood Road with goals from John Oyenuga after 21 minutes, Dennis Oli 12 minutes from time and a Freddie Grant spot-kick with three minutes go to.

Staines Town will be glad to see this season over and hope to re-group in the summer under Johnson Hippolyte.

They shared a 2-2 Wheatsheaf Park draw with Canvey Island, with Devante McKain giving the Swans a 33rd minute lead that Martin Tuohy eventually cancelled out just past the hour-mark. Jeremy Boakye restored Staines` lead after 72 minutes, only for Tuohy to equalise again less than two minutes later.

It was a similar outcome at Earlsmead between Harrow Borough and Leatherhead, who came back from being a 25th minute Harry Newman goal down to take a 2-1 lead through Olu Adeloye on 49 minutes and Ryan Mahal on 61 minutes, only for Lewis Driver to level four minutes from time.
