Maidstone United missed the chance to increase their lead at the top of the Ryman Premier table on Saturday after being held to a 2-2 home draw by lowly Leiston, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

But considering the Stones found themselves 2-0 down to goals from David Head after 28 minutes and a Gareth Heath penalty four minutes later, a draw was probably acceptable. Tom Phipp pulled one back for the hosts and their crowd of 1,577 roared them on to a last-gasp equaliser from Charley Robertson.

Kingstonian are second after beating Margate 2-0 at Kingsmeadow. Ryan Moss gave K`s the lead right on half-time and then Aaron Goode made sure with a second four minutes from time.

AFC Hornchurch are looking like serious contenders for a quick return to Conference South and are now third after a 2-1 win at struggling Thamesmead Town. George Purcell gave the Urchins a 20th minute lead that lasted only nine minutes when Danny Phillips levelled. It looked as though Mead were going to hang on for a point when Stefan Payne popped up with a stoppage time winner for the visitors.

Hornchurch went above Dulwich Hamlet, who were beaten 4-2 at Nyewood Lane against Bognor Regis Town, who are now sixth.

It was goalless until the 66th minute when Arron Hopkinson gave the Rocks the lead that Dean Lodge equalised four minutes later. Lodge put Hamlet in front six minutes later but the turning point came three minutes from time when Hamlet`s Mathieu Boyer was dismissed.

Ben Johnson duly converted the resultant spot-kick to pull Bognor level and in the final minute Craig Robson put the Rocks in front. Terry Dodd added a fourth three minutes into time added on.

Wealdstone complete the top five after beating strugglers Carshalton Athletic 3-1 at Grosvenor Vale. Tom Pett gave the Stones a 32nd minute lead, but that lasted barely six minutes as Adriano Moraes levelled. Elliott Godfrey restored the hosts' lead 10 minutes into the second half and Scott McGleish made sure with a third 16 minutes from the end.

Lowestoft Town suffered a shock when they were beaten by bottom-markers Cray Wanderers at Crown Meadow. Danny Young gave Cray a 57th minute lead and the surprise was confirmed in injury-time when Tommy Whitnell added a second to help lift his side off the bottom.

Charlie Moone gave Hampton & Richmond Borough an early seventh minute lead at Park Lane against Canvey Island before the Gulls hit back to win 2-1. Recent signing John Sands bagged his first goals for the Islanders in the 40th and 56th minutes to turn the game in their favour.

A disappointing first half saw Hendon and Metropolitan Police turn round 0-0 at Earlsmead. But the Greens hit their visitors with four goals in 15 minutes through Jefferson Louis with two, Carl McCluskey and Jack Bennett. Howard Newton replied for the Met.

Wingate & Finchley and East Thurrock United were involved in a thriller that ended in a win by the odd goal in seven for the hosts.

Ahmet Rifat scored the only goal of the first half in the 15th minute to give Wingate the lead. Tom Stephen equalised after 57 minutes and four minutes later Leon McKenzie gave the Rocks the lead that lasted barely a minute as Rifat hit his second of the game.

Leon Smith made it 3-2 to the home side with three minutes to go, only for Kurt Smith to surely earn East Thurrock a point a minute later. However, Smith grabbed Wingate`s winner in stoppage time
