Saturday's Ryman South action review

By David Watters

Folkestone Invicta moved another step closer to winning the Ryman South title on Saturday after a 2-1 win against Chipstead lifted them a massive eighteen points clear at the top of the table, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

But third-bottom Chipstead made it very tough for Neil Cugley`s side, who had to be patient.

They had a great start when Ronnie Dolan gave them a first-minute lead. But Sol Pinnock levelled midway through the second half. And it wasn`t until stoppage time at the end of the game that Ian Draycott popped up with Invicta`s winner.

However, they managed to increase their lead at the top as second-placed Dorking Wanderers and third-placed Worthing both dropped points.

Dorking were held to a goalless draw at home by lowly Chatham Town and saw Tom Tolfrey miss a penalty, while the Rebels suffered a 2-1 defeat at Woodside Road to play-off chasing Molesey.

It was a mixed day for the home side`s Omar Bugiel, who gave his side a 57th minute lead when he scored from the rebound after Liam Allen had saved his initial spot-kick.

But five minutes later he was sent-off for violent conduct. The ten-men held on until the final six minutes when Reis Stanislaus equalised and then Craig Lewington grabbed the winner in stoppage time.

There are plenty of teams chasing a top five spot as only four points separate tenth-placed Corinthian-Casuals and fifth-placed Faversham Town.

Guernsey FC could have been in the mix but they suffered a rare home defeat in front of 613 fans against sixth-placed Hastings United.

Billy Medlock have the visitors a 21st minute lead that Zac Attwood doubled 15 minutes later. Ross Allen reduced the arrears from the spot just before half-time, but Ollie Rowe and Sean Ray added two more in the final 20 minutes to earn the Sussex side a vital win.

Fourth-placed Herne Bay and Faversham both had comfortable away wins.

Bay won 3-0 at second-bottom Peacehaven & Telscombe with goals from Joe Nelder after 55 minutes and a Danny Williams brace on 78 and 81 minutes.

Faversham won the derby 4-0 at The Belmont against bottom-markers Whitstable Town, courtesy of a first and then 10th-minute Charlie Robertson penalties and then Luke Harvey on 34 minutes and Robertson again, who completed his hat-trick in open play seconds into the second half.

Hythe Town, Ramsgate and Corinthian-Casuals are all chasing hard, although only Hythe managed a win on Saturday.

They won 3-1 at Stompond Lane against fourth-bottom Walton & Hersham.

Alfie May bagged a brace for the visitors in the 17th and 51st minutes and Frankie Sawyer a third 20 minutes from time – veteran Richard Pacquette having equalised seven minutes before the break.

The Rams suffered a 5-2 defeat at Colston Avenue against Carshalton Athletic, whose Ricky Korboa gave them a second minute lead.

But the visitors led at the break through a Kane Rowland brace on 23 and 32 minutes. Tommy Bradford levelled from the spot on the hour-mark and then Michael Campbell put the Robins in front again five minutes later.

The Rams then had Tom Loynes dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity and Bradford duly converted the resulting penalty to make it 4-1 – Korboa adding a fifth in injury-time.

Casuals suffered a 2-1 defeat at the King George`s Field against mid-table South Park, who led at the break through Kofi Quartey`s 45th minute effort.

Six minutes after the break and Dylan Merchant doubled the visitors' lead that Casuals could only cut by one through Shaun Okojie on 66 minutes.

Both Sittingbourne and Walton Casuals did their survival hopes a boost with respective away wins at Tooting & Mitcham United and fellow strugglers East Grinstead Town.

Jordan Wells scored with one of Sittingbourne`s few shots on target at Imperial Fields with less than a minute to go while Casuals won by the same scoreline at East Grinstead, courtesy of a 38th minute Gabriel Odunaike effort.
