Saunders dismisses striker talk

Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders has ruled out a move for highly-rated midfielder Jon Wallis following his release by Dartford.

Wallis was let go by the Conference Premier outfit this week but Saunders insists the Ryman League's Stones would only enter the market for a striker with plenty of competition already in midfield as they prepare for life in the Ryman's top flight.

Saunders told Kentonline.co.uk: "We’ve got a lot of competition in that department with Michael Phillips, Danny Lye, Fabio Saraiva, Alex Brown and Lea Dawson, plus the academy boys.

"I did speak to Tony Burman [Dartford manager] at the end of last season when he said Jon might be leaving and if it had happened sooner, I might have been interested.

"He's a player I've always liked but we're strong in midfield. Unless a big centre-forward becomes available, I don't think we'll do anything else."
